Changing a kitten onto Adult food
Hi,
I have 2 kittens who are coming up to 5 months old and I have noticed that the adult cat foods are for 12+ months. Should I wait until they are 12 months or is it ok to start weaning them onto adult food at this age. The only reason I am asking really is down to cost issues however if moving them onto adult food too young will be bad for them health wise I would not even consider doing it - any advice?? |

Re: Changing a kitten onto Adult food
kitten food is rich in things that your kitten might need for growth and health. most of the adult foods might be lacking in these things in the amounts that the kitten food would have. also a lot of adult foods are based on the average 'neutered' cat or cat that has gone through hormonal changes already. They say a year old just as an average. I personally feed my kittens kitten food until they are 9 mths old unless they are under sized or had some complications as kittens. it's a personal preference i think.

Re: Changing a kitten onto Adult food
My kittens are 8 months old and I'm going to keep them on kitten food untill they are 12 months.
They will still need their kitten food at 5 months as they are still growing and kitten food has the right balance for them |

Re: Changing a kitten onto Adult food
My youngest kitten decided she would rather have adult food than her kitten food when she was about 8 weeks old. And believe me she is still growing without any problems.
I have seen this come up on here before, I seem to remeber some breeders on here saying that this was not a problem, so I didn't worry about it. I think it is advised to start the change over from about 6 months if you are trying to do things by the book. Just out of interest, what brand of food do you feed? |

Well I think it might be worth you changing the wet food and leaving them on kitten dry, just because the adult dry are quite chunky pieces. They will eat alot at this age just because they are still growing.

Re: Changing a kitten onto Adult food
Well, what did we do before kitten food existed?? (and it's only been around for 15-20 years or so) Kitten foods really are just a gimmick to get us to spend more money! Adult foods are OK for kittens - so long as the kitten gets 4-5 meals per day of good quality food, she should be fine.

Re: Changing a kitten onto Adult food
We wean ours with everything but such as sardines mixed with scrambled egg, baby porridge and a touch of honey, egg yolk and evap milk amongst others and by the time they're eating they tuck into their mums food, with biccies and so far so good
But it's really whatever works well for your cat/kitts![]() |

My kittens go round eating the adults food and as it's down 24/7 you can't stop them. It's never done them any harm. Plus mine have raw meats which is fine for any age ![]() |
