Re: Changing a kitten onto Adult food

Was interested to read this about kitten food, my kitten is coming up for 5 months and eats mostly hills science dried kitten food, he used to eat the pouches too but recently he has only been eating the gravy. Anyway I bought some little tins in the pet shop the other day, applaws tuna and prawn and I can't remember the other one but they both seemed to say they were ok for kittens but just not to give them too much of it, I felt i wanted to try it as i don't want him to just eat dried food and we had tried a variety of kitten pouches. Anyway the other one that I can't remember did not go down that well either but it was pate like, the applaws however he loved and licked the plate clean!! I just didn't know if it was wise to let him eat the whole tin, he seems to be fine though so I think I might get some more and give him a couple of tins a week, even though its technically cat food not kitten.

Applaws is fine for kittens, It's just that it's not a complete food. The kitten applaws is, but not the adult. As long as you are giving biscuits too, kitty will be just fine Another good one is Hi Life 60% meat or fish

Thanks Selk, I actually couldn't believe he cleaned the dish!! The last few things i have tried he has messed about with but not realy eaten, I was half thinking he would do the same then I saw him starting to eat it and when I went back through the dish was clear!! Might try the other one you suggest too.

Haha, Applaws always goes down well You can get the Hi Life from most supermarkets. Make sure it's the 60% meat or 60% fish one cause they do have other versions.

I agree with you. I asked my vet about this as i have a 4month and an 11 month and was worried about the wee boy when i change CJ to adult food next month.

My vet said exactly what kozykatz said and said kitten food is a relatively recent thing and we managed very well before all the lifestage diets came on the scene.

Good quality food is the most important thing i think anyway

Re: Changing a kitten onto Adult food

Sorry to hijack but seemed silly to start new thread on same subject!

My Bilbo is coming up 5 months. At the moment he is having natures best adult biscuits down all the time (recommended by breeder) and having half tin applaws kitten in morning mixed with hills science kitten biscuits and the same in the evening half tin with biscuits.

Question is is it ok to start giving him the adult tins? he licks his bowl clean now, whereas before there would always be a tiny bit left either when home from work or first thing in the morning. I am now worried he is not getting enough but don't think he would eat a whole 2 tins - the adult tins are slightly bigger so could half those instead (and he could have a variety of flavors not just chicken!)

Also can i stop adding the biscuits to his mix - he eats the other biscuits fine.

Re: Changing a kitten onto Adult food

There seems to be no reason to mix the dry in with the wet, maybe if you didn't add the dry then he would be able to eat a whole tin at a time rather than half. But if you want to change him onto the adult, I don't see it being a problem. The only thing is, I am not sure if applaws is a complete food, but as you feed a complete dry aswell, then this is not a problem.
