weight loss for cats?

Anyone got any great tips for helping my kitty lose some weight.

My mum used to treat her lots with bacon and rubbish despite my asking her not to (she worked on a deli counter so she constantly had the pick of all the meat ends which would go in the bin)

But we had a wee trip to the vet recently and now Nala has to go to weight clinic every three weeks

We have been giving her go-cat weight control food for a while now but to no avail and we have been trying to get her exercising but a lot of the time she just isnt interested. We got her a ball to put food in that she had to play with to get the food out and she ignored it and sat by her bowl crying lol.

she is 7.7kgs currently she badly needs to lose some pounds

Re: weight loss for cats?

has she had any blood work done to make sure her thyroid is working ok? also have you tried the hills or royal canin diets? not familiar with the go cat ones to be honest. but you need to work out how much your cat weighs now and how much your cat should weigh then the diet programs should suggest what to feed to reach that goal. usually is made up of so many grams of food per day for a period of time and then adjusting that as the loss continues.

Re: weight loss for cats?

yeah the vet did a bit of bllod work her thyroid is fine and she doesnt have diabete4s or anything like that. The blood was traumatic for me more than her i think lol took awhile to get a vein then there just seemed to be blood everywhere and she sat there quite happy while i panicked lol.

the vet was going to contact the company who makes her food to get calories per gram and give me an exact amount to feed her when we go back next to get weighed.

Re: weight loss for cats?

I'd take her off Go-cat, put her on one of the better biscuits if you are giving her biscuits, there are several of them more suitable.
Will she eat raw ?

I would try and cut down the biscuits you give her, and substitute it will either a quality, high meat wet or fresh food. Biscuits contain a lot of carbs and anything not used by the body gets stored as fat.

Will she play with a rod toy, get her taking some exercise that would help too. Try getting a Da Bird, never met a cat that didn't go mad for those they are irresitible to cats.

Re: weight loss for cats?

all in all you will see better results in weight loss and over all better health in your cat if you use a better quality cat food (wet or dry). but i know sometimes it's difficult to imagine a lot of these healthy foods as being easy access and in your budget. there are loads of people on here that are aware of some of these diets and how to get them within your budget. I know Go cat is very readily available and very inexpensive. But there are lots of other choices out there that would benefit your cats health more than go cat. It's fantastic to hear that your vet is doing some leg work for you contacting Nestle/Purina to find out about go cat for you as that's your food of choice at the moment.

Re: weight loss for cats?

the reason she is on go-cat is cos she is quite a fussy eater she will only eat wet food every now and then last time she was on wet food she just stopped eating altogether which obv isnt good. Go-cat were the only type in my work who had a 'diet' cat food in dry form. (i work in a big supermarket so there were a lot of choices) she used to have whiskas before the whole 'diet' thing but it used to make her sick after eating it

Re: weight loss for cats?

My cat was 8kg and we had to put him on a diet. Basically we just gave him less food. :/

Re: weight loss for cats?

okay so ive been researching for the last wee while and dug out the stuff the vet gave me (busy moving house it took me ages to find it in all the boxes lol)

her current weight is 7.92kg her initial target weight 6.09kgs and he reccomends i should be feeding her 244 cals a day to acheive this.

I have also conceded the best way to lower her calorie intake is to get her on wet food, so once we get moved into the new house i will let her settle then try switching her food over.

any tips on what would be best to move her onto and how much 244 cals is in wet food a day would be muchly appreciated.

I might start a picture diary of her weight loss to keep us both motivated lol
