Help with diet for my cat.

I rescued a cat of the RSPCA and when I went to pick her up they said there had been some blood in her stool, but it had cleared up. They'd run some tests and there was nothing to worry about.

So I got her home and took her off her medicated diet (slowly) and fed her the recomended dry food from the RSPCA (James well beloved adult) but it made the blood come back again. So I went to my local vet and picked up some Royal canin sensitivity SC31 which stopped any blood in her stool. After feeding her that course I gradually re-introduced the james well beloved, but have noticed the bleeding has returned.

Im going to pick up some royal canin one my way home tonight, but I was hoping someone could recommend me a good alternative to the james well beloved which is similar in constituency to the royal canin..... Im reluctant to continue feeding her the royal canin sc31 as it is very expensive (i think its counted as a medical diet). Im also hoping for a food with no additives etc.

cheers for your help in advance (sorry I havent lurked on the boards for a bit before posting, but Im quite keen to get her sorted out ASAP)

Re: Help with diet for my cat.

You can buy RC SC 31 online much cheaper than you can in the vets. I buy it for one of mine from Vet UK for Healthy Happy Pets it is £20.32 for a 3.5kg bag.

Re: Help with diet for my cat.

Is it a diet I can feed regularly though? I dont want it to be detrimental to hear health over prolonged usage. (I might sound like a plonker here, but I'm a new cat owner)

Even online its more expensive than normal catfood.......

have you tried one of the normal royal canin diets? also try Nutro. it's fairly light on the tum from what i hear. Can i ask which JWB you have used? are you using a wet diet or dry?

Re: Help with diet for my cat.

From what my vet has told me it can be fed for life.

I have managed to get Toby weaned onto half RC SC31 and half Orijen and he is fine. It has just taken a while to get the balance right.

As for the cost I cannot answer that for you.

Re: Help with diet for my cat.

The JWB is the Adult

I might try the RC sensitive you suggest.

I have a small bag of the RC31 coming in the post, so ill use that to clear her tum up for now and try the sensitive one after.

Apart from the blood she's a very happy cat, and I love haing her around, just need to get this & a cat flap sorted

here are some random links. for some ideas of things to try.

this is the one you are using at the moment with an online price...3.5kg should last for a month or so.
Royal Canin veterinary diet feline Sensitivity control S/O | Royal Canin

then there is the non prescription sensitive here
Royal Canin Cat sensitive adult | Royal Canin cat food | Royal Canin

this is purina's non prescription
Purina Pro Plan adult cat delicate | Pro Plan

also which JWB are you using fish? turkey? duck? lamb? it may be the protein that is causing the aggravation.

Re: Help with diet for my cat.

She's being fed the turkey one..... She'd been at the RSPCA place for 4 months being fed that, its strange that it should start making her bleed a week before I picked her up.

Im going to try the Purina after the medicated food has gone, and if that doesnt work ill probably try the RC senstive.......

Sorry forgot to add the JWB im using is turkey and rice.

bless well good luck with it all let us know how you get on and if i can be of anymore help. i've been studying brand name diets for a couple years now with courses at work and online. plus i went through a lot with my old cat who now lives with my ex husband. she had major food allergies so i had to research loads of foods! really if you are still having issues with it all after you try the others best to contact your vets and let them know what's going on. they might need to do some blood work or a fecal sample.
