Re: Help! My cat needs to lose weight

I do agree that there are "bad" wet foods (so many of them have added sugar etc) but there are no "good" dried foods

I think if you stick to high protein, no grain/cereal in both you shouldn't go far wrong. Get vet to check teeth every year.

Re: Help! My cat needs to lose weight

Orijen does not contain cereals/grains/rice

Also I think that there are different animal food regulations for UK and USA and that the former are more stringent. The recommended book is American.

But it contains a high percentage of potato, and various other fruits and vegaetables none of which are appropriate for cats. Potato is very high in carbohydrate.

Yes the book is American but there aren't differences in cat physiology & metabolism around the world.

Re: Help! My cat needs to lose weight

I appreciate that many vets sell various types of dried food, but don't be taken in by the hype - vets are paid to promote these foods!

I don't think vets get a great deal of training on nutrition, other than in very general terms, unless they take specific postgraduate courses.

Re: Help! My cat needs to lose weight

A typical Persian should weigh between 7-12 lbs depending on bone structure. Your cat is within those limits so I definitely wouldn't regard him as being overweight yet.

My cats, Chinchilla Persians, which are a Persian breed, are smaller and lighter boned than an average Persian but that is typical of the breed, and although fed mainly on JWB and Hills dry foods they dont seem to put much weight on. I would be very happy if they did as it can be a problem when competing against the larger and heavier Persians.

Again an American site and s/he was 'converted' in 1993. i think probably a lot has changed since then.

I am not convinced that all dry food is bad. I fed my Maine Coon exclusively on IAMS dry until he died at age 15. No gum disease and teeth fine.

I think in the end it is the quality of the food you feed. I now would feed a combo of wet/raw/dry but I would concentrate on 'good' foods i.e. high in meat proteins and no grain/cereal.

I am not concerned about vegetables - i.e. orijen dry is 25% combo of herbs and vegetables including sweet potato. Sweet potato is high in fibre and for humans a recommeded slow burning food - not sure got terminology right. The vegetables are processed and cats do actually seek out and eat green matter.

Re: Help! My cat needs to lose weight

Its all very well listing ingrediants, but its not just whats in it that matters, it is what they do with it to get it in there. The processes different food goes through is vital to the goodness they provide at the end.
