Re: Help! My cat needs to lose weight

Wow 6 pouches a day?! My cats get 1 a day! My boy cat is on a diet too right now, his problem is frequent visits to the fridge resulting in a goodie each time. We've cut out the fridge goodies, and making sure that everything he could steal is put away. We've also been getting the cat toys out more and encouraging him to play.

Re: Help! My cat needs to lose weight

It's an excellent well written book, the author is a well known feline specialist vet and Ocicat breeder in the US - she formerly worked for a leading dried food manufacturer.

Re: Help! My cat needs to lose weight

Nor am I, most of the time, but I'm a scientist and the book gives scientific explanations as to why dried food is unsuitable for cats - it all makes perfect sense to me, so that is why I made my decision.

Re: Help! My cat needs to lose weight

Have you seen the cat exercise wheel on the classified ads.

I'm very interested as an activity toy for my two which will have the added benefit of a nice workout to boot.

Re: Help! My cat needs to lose weight

if you keep feeding your cat wet foods all the time it will eventually have bad teeth and gums, makes purrrfect sense to feed them on dry foods which are better for their teeth

Re: Help! My cat needs to lose weight

Sorry, that's simply not true. Please quote a reference )

Dry foods are bad for the teeth (a) because they are coated in an acidic "meat digest" that makes them palatable to cats, and (b) due to their high grain / starch content that sticks around the teeth leading to plaque & decay.

I have seen references to this as well, I will try and find one of the links.

The dry food myth and teeth seem to be around as they bite into a hard biscuit the action removes plaque from. Invariably biscuits make a reappearance at some point, and you can see that most of them seem to have been swallowed whole, so that doesn't really apply.

Cheap wet foods do contain sugars, but if you are careful about the ones you choose, then that shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Help! My cat needs to lose weight

I think there are 'good' dry foods and 'good' wet foods, 'bad' dry foods and 'bad' wet foods.

I think if you stick to high protein, no grain/cereal in both you shouldn't go far wrong. Get vet to check teeth every year.
