Supplementing kitty diets

I was wondering.. How can you supplement your kitten's diet so that she doesn't just eat plain old dry food everyday?
Any recipies for treats or meals to boost kitty's immune system/sheen/etc? Not too hard please, I can barely fry an egg.

Oh and can and should cats eat fruit and/or veggies? I read somewhere that they're not efficient in digesting carbs though, so rice and stuff is out of the question right?

Ok one more and a little off topic - should we clean our cat's ears? If yes, how and how often? And is it alright to give cats baths? and what toys are good to leave alone with cats to entertain them?

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice!

Re: Supplementing kitty diets

I would "supplement" their diet by stopping almost all their dry food and instead feed them a good quality wet cat food. This should be mostly meat, grain free and can contain a small amount of vegetable matter.

Ear cleaning is good. You can get feline ear wipes but I find tepid water and cotton wool balls works just as well. Mine always get a good old ear clean before a show. They actually like having them cleaned More often though, they lick each others ears clean, inside and out

Ace reply BSH!

Little to add to that. Erica, what dry food are you currently feeding your cat? Have you ever fed your cat anything else but dry food?

You can also use olive oil to clean your cat's ears. Doesn't need to be the extra virgin, organic or biodynamic variety

I second the above Check out the A-Z guide of wet (and dry) foods in this section, it's great, very informative

Re: Supplementing kitty diets

I checked it and it helped loads!
Right now I'm feeding her whiskas for kittens but i did not think to see if there were any grain products in there. Definitely going to change it.
But is it alright to feed the cat dry food in the morning and wet for the other two? I worry she doesn't get used to it and the whole diarrhea thing will happen again.
Another thing, is it alright to give cats probiotics (eg. a pill a day)? I see around the internet that it can jbe given just like that. Are there any adverse effects and if it IS alright to give her probiotics what kind do you suggest?

Re: Supplementing kitty diets

Lots of people feed dry and wet foods. I leave mine some dry in the day on weekdays if I am not at home. So that will be fine. Some dry foods are better than others, Orijin and Applaws and Encore (Sainsburys) are high meat contenet and grain free. I remove the bwl of dry food when I get home so they will then be hungry and eat their wet food in the evening. I feed them a wet meal for breakfast as well.

I have little experience of feeding probiotics. I do know you can get feline probiotic drinks rather than tablets. Mine tried a free sample and liked them, but I do not buy them. A drink would get more fluid in them, which is a good thing.

If you are worried about diarrhoea when changing over foods, instigate the changes slowly so their digestive systems can adjust.

Hope that helps

Re: Supplementing kitty diets

This reply is months late, but thank you all for your help!
Because we really couldn't afford to give our kitten the proper materials for a contented life, and our house lacked space, I decided that it was best for the kitty to return her to her previous owner, a rich old lady who found her. She is very rich and adores cats (she has already 3 cats and 2 dogs) and when I went to her house to give Toothless back, I notices huge cat trees at the back. I also asked her what she feeds the cats, and they are apparently on the BARF diet! My mind is much more at ease knowing that the kitty is living a better life now, but these few months of taking care of her as taught me loads, thanks to all the help I gained on this forum.
Thank you all!
