Vaccinations?

I am bringing home my new kittens tomorrow and was wondering about vaccinations. I have been told that you don't HAVE to vaccinate kittens , as it can do more harm than good?? I was told this by a lady who uses a homeopathic vet. I have heard of dog breeders who don't vaccinate but never cats. I have always vaccinated in the past, but was wondering what other people's thoughts were?

Re: Vaccinations?

I have always vaccinated my cats/kittens and only ever known one to have a reaction but that was to a live vaccine x she got over it though and has a loving family and is very happy xx

i think vaccines do help cats just as much as vaccines help us and i think against awful things like cat flu it can be a god send should they ever get anything like it at any stage in their life as they don't get all symptoms and get over things quicker xx

has the lady suggested you use the homeopathic route then?? or just said not to vaccinate?? xx

personally i suppose it depends on many factors really x

if indoor/outdoor cats, if you breed/show or have more than one cat and if you come into contact with other cats on a regular basis etc x

if yes to any of those you really should protect them if you can xx

but it is your prerogative at the end of the day hunny, if you want to and the lady isn't giving you an alternative route then she's not been that helpful lol xx

no idea myself about homeopathic route, though i know alot of people use it and it's more than likely better but can't advise on it xxx

Re: Vaccinations?

I have always vaccinated, although wouldn't use the live vaccine as it made one of my cats really ill

I have nursed 2 rescue kittens through cat flu and it was horrific - I really wouldn't wish any other cat to go through that. Luckily, they made a full recovery but many others are not so lucky.

Even though most of my cats are indoor cats, I would always worry about if one of them got out and contracted something.

Re: Vaccinations?

These are moggies and will be out and about. As I said, I'd never heard of not vaccinating I will vaccinate as if anything happened I'd never forgive myself.

Re: Vaccinations?

I would vaccinate any cats that are going to be going outside.
Even my pedigrees have had their vaccinations and they dont go out.

The Leukameia one is the one that can be dangerous - mine havent had that vaccination

If you aren't sure about having vaccinations you could get the kittens titre tested (simple blood sample) to determine their level of immunity and whether they really need the vaccinations. Some kittens and puppies are born with natural immunity.

This is what I will be doing with my dogs and cats in Decemeber before their vaccinations are due in January. There is some truth that vaccinations can be harmful but this is more centred on over vaccination i.e. boosters each and every year.

Most people will get the initial vaccinations and the first booster and then do titre tests before any more boosters. I'm going one step further and getting them tested before they have their first booster and I know of dog breeders that will test pups before they even have their intial vaccinations.

Re: Vaccinations?

Hi Daisy and welcomeIn your shoes i wouldn't worry too much about the 101 vaccinations your kitts may need..because to be honest most of what they could be vaccinated for may do more harm than good, but i'd get the main ones that your kitts could be at risk from, remember too that no vaccination is a guarantee nor are they "miracles in a jab" but better safe than sorry, speak to your vet and get an understanding of whats what so to speak and go from their
