Hi
We welcomed a rescue cat to our home tonight, 6 month old black moggy living rough, recovering from broken rib, undernourished. He was totally fine, playing, sleeping lots, bonding with us already. He ate half a pouch about an hour after he arrived. Then suddenly 20 minutes ago violently sicked all of it up over the bed where he had settled. Is this normal? Could it be the change in environment? Maybe he didn't need to be fed when he arrived? He seems fine now, perky and purring. Thanks, Francesca |

Re: New cat violently sick
assuming you rescued him straight off the street (?) it could just be a case of too much too soon. These cats are often so used to a very bad diet, that anything half normal just makes them ill initially. IF this is the case... smaller portions more often usually solves the problem. If need be, a tablespoon full at most every hour until his stomach settles. Undernourished cats often need a very gradual build up of their food. I recommend feeding at least 6 times per day, if your lifestyle allows that, small portions and often. Of course as he gets better you can cut the feeding times down to "normal" times and up the amounts of food to more normal amounts.
However, if he is showing any signs of lethargy this morning or anything untoward at all, get him to a vet today during office hours today ... otherwise you're going to be left with the hefty weekend emergency surcharges. If he hasn't already been seen by a vet I really recommend this anyway. Chances are he'll have worms, not to mention the possibilities of bacterial stomach infection that a few days on antibiotics (sooner rather than later) would cure in no time. |

Re: New cat violently sick
Cant really add more to TJE's excellent advice.
I assume you took him in from the streets, and so all of her advice stands. If he came from a rescue centre, and has been there a few days did you use the same food as they use? It could be just the stress from the move in that case. Again, anything that worries you at all today, off to the vets!

Re: New cat violently sick
Can't add much to the excellent advice above but you may wish to try him on something quite bland for a couple of days - say cooked white fish and/or chicken - maybe with a little cooked rice added.
Let us know how he gets on. ![]()

Re: New cat violently sick
I would also suggest feeding small regular amounts. It might be that he was hungry, eat more than normal too quickly (and of course something different to his normal diet) and his stomach couldn't take it.

Thanks all, this is helpful advice.
He was rescued from some wasteland behind houses by friends of ours who have cats. They took him to the vet to get checked out, and had him in their home for about 3 days feeding him with their cats. The stuff we gave him last night was the food they provided. It's hard to tell if he's lethargic as he has been mostly sleeping since they rescued him, recovering from bad diet and the broken rib, plus the vet 'sorted' him when they took him on Wednesday so he's been groggy. He's just eating some of the dried food they left for him so I'll see what happens. The stuff last night WAS in jelly. Maybe he needs something lighter like kitten food? He's a real sweetie, seems desperate for attention and affection F |

Re: New cat violently sick
Great to hear that he seems to have found a superb home with you!
Cats don't need light food. Did your friends mention any problems with food when they handed him over? It could well be that the stress of the past few days is catching up with him, that he is gulping the food down because he is not used to a regular food source if he was a stray. Could be lots of reasons. As the others have suggested could you just feed little but often. Not a whole pouch by maybe a quarter or half of one every few hours? Edit: I just saw that he was being neutered the other day? Could be a reaction to the stress and the anaesthetic. |
