Re: Expressing Cat Milk for newborn Kitten!!

Thanks to everyone for your help and support. Nearly 3am and kitten doing well on the evaporated milk method. I'll be at the vet first thing to pick up the correct milk and I'll keep you all posted on how kitten and mum get on.

I'm still amazed we were told to express mum. Has anybody ever expressed milk from a cat? My family have had cats for over 30 years and I've not heard this one before.

Thanks again!

Re: Expressing Cat Milk for newborn Kitten!!

Glad to hear you have got the kitten feeding!

You will also need to wipe his bum will a little bit of wet tissue (used like the mum would her tongue) to get him to wee/poo. I think this should be done shortly after each feed.

Keep us posted on how he does, and let us know how it goes at the vets.

Re: Expressing Cat Milk for newborn Kitten!!

Thanks everyone for your support. The kitten is still with us but still not feeding from the mother. Will take milk from us every 2 hours that the vet supplied, no problem. It's half the size of the others, very weak and the poor little runt keeps on getting pushed to the back of the milk chain. It doesn't appear to latch on to mum like the others, it tries to and then just rolls over and falls back down. It doesn't crawl like the others its rolls from one spot to another that tells me it hasn't the strength in its legs yet. Personally I think it has a 50 50 chance and other than keeping it fed and warm I don't think there is much more we can do.

Well done! He's come this far so keep on feeding him and keeping him warm and before you know it he will be joining the others at the milk bar.

Re: Expressing Cat Milk for newborn Kitten!!

Sadly, we lost the kitten last night. We kept the bed area warm using a hot water bottle and kept the feeding routine up however during the day the request for food went down and by evening there was no interest at all. Within a few hours temperature went down and it was all over. In the end it was half the size of the others, something was clearly not right and I guess nature took the correct path in the end. The others are strong and happy at the milk bar and mum's very proud. Interesting though that she showed very little interest in the little one, almost ignored it as if it didn't belong to her. Poor little thing. Thanks again to everyone for the support.

Oh I am so sorry that you lost him, but I know you did the best you could. Yes i'm sure the mother knew something we didn't, nature can be so cruel sometimes.

At least now mum can put all her effort an energy into the rest of the litter without any distractions, to produce some happy, healthy, strong kittens.
