Lightbulb A-Z of wet food for cats

Important update

~ The information in this thread is now outdated for quite a few of the foods but I don't have the time or indeed inclination to bring it back up to date. To avoid misinformation I am sorry to say that I have removed the detailed information about each one, only leaving the list of available foods within the UK in alphabetical order.

~ ~ ~ *~ ~ ~

The old version of this list can be found here: https://sites.google.com/site/wetcatfoodlist/. This leads you to a temporary holding site and the list is in a pdf at bottom of that page.

~ ~ ~ *~ ~ ~

For information about the foods that you would like to feed, look at the ingredients (now called composition) and analysis bit (found on labels, usually more detailed info is found on the manufacturer's website or the likes of zooplus) and don't hesitate to contact the manufacturer for more information. Whether they will give the info you need/want, well, that is a different matter.

For some info as to what good foods are and why that doesn't (so far) include supermarket foods see here. My opinions on what is a "good" food are based on the following (personal) yardsticks:

At the most basic:
~ the food contains an overall high "meat" (meat here means meat + offal) content (high > 70%)
~ the food contains more meat (ie. muscle meat inc heart) than offal (kidney, lung, liver etc). Ideally, the ratio imo should be around 70/30
~ the food has a balanced calcium/phosphorus ratio (around 1.2:1).
~ the food contains no added sugars
~ the food contains either no grains/potato or just a small amount of it (< 5%). Don't forget that ingredients are listed/weighed in uncooked form and grains will expand during the cooking process

At the more advance level:
~ the food contains a good % of calories from protein, followed by fat and a low % of calories from carbs

Some wet foods available to people in the UK are:

Almo Nature (complementary)
Animonda Carny - zooplus.co.uk
Applaws (complementary)

The magic 4%

The 4% declaration is a legal labelling requirement which represents the MINIMUM percentage content of the characterising ingredient guaranteed to be present by the manufacturer. For more info check out - Pet Food Manufacturers Association. Pet food industry news, pet nutrition, pet ownership.

There seems to be some confusion within the esteemed circle of the PF as to what this means. Please note that this does NOT mean that the food only contains 4% meat overall - it purely means that pet manufacturers are only required to state the minimum proportion of the flavour meat. The overall meat content will be higher but will be made up from meat and byproducts from other animals.

Compiled with some of the info from the thread before it went byebye.
Don't forget that what Hobbs said still stands - much of it is out of date. But this might be useful to some.

Re: A-Z of wet food for cats

Hi all, I'm new and have a female Rosetta Bengal.
I have read that the dry food is like giving ones cats grains.
So I'm looking at wet food and when i look at this chart above, the meat contents in the can are over 80%,the Tesco one I'm giving my cat now says only 4%.
So my question is it says on the chart "monthly supply" how much to keep ones cat on these 80% meat cans approx pm £
Which are most recommended on that list and how do I identify the 80%+ cans,do you have some names for me.
I pulled the glasses out today in Tesco and trying to read the small print, but everything I think I viewed had only 4% so does one have to buy from the online shops?
I am thinking full sized cans not pouches?
Thanx

i started feeding my cat applaws dry food which he like but i still like to give him some wet food everyday as well i vary the wet depending on supermarket offers and what i know he likes he usually has the whiskas simply pouches and at the moment gourmet tins is this ok he seems to be happy on it ?

Re: A-Z of wet food for cats

Based on what Hobbs used to say, and my own research, I don't use any of the stuff from Tesco. Bozita and Animonda Carny from zooplus are my cat's faves.

Applaws or Porta 21 for occasional dry treats - he loves em

I tried the Bozita tins on my two - they sniffed and walked away

But, all cats are different - so yours may love it! I know a lot of kitties do
