HELP! Weird insect/bug/tick/flea ???
Hello Everyone!
My names Abby and I have two male cats, Tigger who is 2 years old and very small and Hercules who is 2 3/4 years old and is massive!!!! We live in the countryside so I am use to the joys of fleas and de-flea them on a regular basis. The last time being about 2 weeks ago. There is a mean cat that lives locally who has not been "done" and comes into our garden and sprays by BBQ! I know Tigger is a little to big for his boots and stands up to him so was not surprised to find a cut under his chin - another war wound! It was last night that I was convinced I saw a black bug run across his now healing wound. It has virtually healed, just has not fur on a small patch. This evening he decided to be overly affectionate so I used it as a chance to investigate further and I saw them on his white bit under his chin. The look black and are long and thin and very visable on his white fur. I want to treat them (especially as since finding them, I feel itchy all over!!!)but I do not have a clue what they are!!! I dont know whats the best course of action to take....any advice would be greatly appreciated, especially if someone can identify what they are!!! Many thanks in advance Abby |

Re: HELP! Weird insect/bug/tick/flea ???
Hi Abby,
having moved to rural wales a few months ago, and treating my cats regularily with 'Frontline', like you, I was surprised to see things that looked like fleas- one week after treatment!-, but these 'fleas' moved slowly, and appeared to be biting in a bit like a sheep tick, but were blacky brown and flea like . I managed to catch one and sealed it between some sellotape, took it down to my vets (leonard brothers), where it was microscoped and identified as a Rabbit flea. I was advised that Frontline can take up to 24 hours to kill fleas or ticks, but obviously the cats were hunting every few hours and getting more on them, which makes it look like the Frontline isnt working...but it is !! I think just be extra diligent with the treatment, and make sure its regular, and rest in the knowledge that it is working, and that the things you are seeing, will soon die off, ((and be replaced with the next ones ))!![]() If you are still worried, catch one (like I did), and get it looked at by your own vet just to be sure, but it sounds very much like the problem I have had with my cats...(the one cat, 'Sunny', even sits with his head poking into the rabbit burrows...waiting !!...we call him the stealth bomber !!)..hope this helps, Jax.
