Cat is licking her hair off

Hello

My cat had an accident about a week ago and received a broken pelvis. She is now recovering for four weeks cage rest. She is coming along really well but now she has started licking her hair off. It started on one leg and now the leg's nearly hairless and raw! She has also started on her other legs. I believe this is bordom. The vet gave me some spray which is supposed to taste disgusting but is an antiseptic at the same time. But she actually licks this too! I have now lightly bandaged her leg up just to give the licking a rest in this spot. She also ripped one of her paw pads off as well which I also bandaged.

If I didn't have enough to worry about with the pelvis!

Any thoughts?

I have given her toys and placed her out of the cage for breaks. I changed the cat litter to paper type. Even let her watch video's on the laptop.

She gets more spoilt than my fiance!!

Thanks.

I would be tempted to try a collar.

Yes i would advise a lampshade collar too just for unsupervised times so she is not tempted to lick at it. It does not sound nice but it is for the greater good. I am sure you can buy them from pets at home.

Re: Cat is licking her hair off

There is a doughnut type collar that might be easier to wear and less upsetting, and there are some de stressors you can try . Poor baby might be getting some jangly nerve sensation from the injury that started her licking, but unfortunately cats can become fixated and won't stop once they start.

You can get zylkene tabs from your vet [you open the capsules and mix with food ] which are recommended for this repetitive type behaviour [not sure how effective it would be if she is having tingling, pins and needles etc though ] Feliway diffusers can be helpful too.

Poor girlie, hope she feels better soon.

Re: Cat is licking her hair off

This is a really old thread from July. The cat in question is hopefully running around fully healed by now.

Re: Cat is licking her hair off

Thanks everyone for your advice and wishes. I didn't realise this post was still going. The cat has fully recovered now. Amazing really.
We did take the cat back to the vet a few times over its licking and bloody paw, and they gave us a collar for free. However we didn't end up using it. We also stopped using ointments and bad tasting sprays and she ended up licking them too. Bandaging it was also a mistake as the skin needed to breathe and would become more infected.
We held out for a bit longer and as her pelvs healed and she became more mobile, she became more occupied with other things and stopped licking her hair so much. It grew back well. The main problem was she was breaking the skin. She stopped this quite soon after taking her out of the cage. Having no hair was not so much of a problem.
Actually the best thing for her was the removing her from the cage, 3 weeks or so from the accident. She was just getting anxious in there. We confined her to the lounge room and removed anything which she could hurt herself on.
She now has no sign of the injury which dislocated her ankle and broke her pelvis in so many places. I think her jump distance has shortened but at least she keeps out of our top shelf wardrobes now .
She's the same cheeky cat she was before the accident, but maybe she now gives, and gets, more love.
