new kitten please help me

Hi there, I bought a kitten from a pet shop yesterday, they didnt look like they were being looked after very well which was the main reason for buying her. They told me she was 10 weeks old. She settled in very quickly and seemed happy but she is very lethargic and has slept pretty much solid since we got her home. She has quickly adapted to using her litterbox but she has got diarreah and has been sick. She is very thin and you can feel all her ribs and spine, I'm desperate for some help as she is so small I feel she needs some goodness in her. I have not fed her the same food as she was on in the pet shop as the pet shop person just seemed interested in making money out of me. I am currently feeding her small portions of whiskas kitten food and whiskas kitten biscuits on top, mashed up well. Someone have any ideas of what is wrong or is she just settling in? Also she hasnt meowed yet!

Re: new kitten please help me

I would take her to the vet on Monday to register her and for a check up.

Not expreienced with kittens but they seem to need to be wormed regularly. I would go to Pets at Home to get some kitten milk too and talk to the staff there.

Apparently PAH have access to vet via telephone so if they don't know something they will ring up the vet. Now that I call customer service.

The diahorrea is most likely caused by the sudden change in diet. A kitten or cat needs to be changed over to a new diet gradually, mixing a small amount in the regular food then increasing daily till the changeover is complete.

If you know what she was fed on while at the pet shop it would be better to get some and stick with the same food till she has settled in.

Yep I thought that would be the reason why. I will go back to the pet shop on Monday and get the proper food (they are closed today) hopefully she will be alright for one day. Seems very lethargic and weak at the moment so I guess havin sickness and diareah is not good. Thanks for all help.

Make sure she is drinking plenty of water as a young kitten can get dehydrated very quickly.
It would also be a good idea to take her to the vet ASAP for a check up just to be on the safe side.

Re: new kitten please help me

You MUST get this kitten to a Vet as soon as possible. If there are no appointments, explain to the receptionist and they will fit you in.
Please DON'T wait.

Kittens get dehydrated very quickly and also suffer from stress. Make sure there is plenty of room temperature drinking water available.

The problem could have different causes and your Vet is the best person to consult.

prehaps you have some plain chicken that you could cook then shred for her as this would be gentler on her little tummy , also i wouldnt take my buisness back to that shop again as he sounds like an incompetent uninterested guy

I agree completely...The kitten needs a vet sooner rather than later and the pet shop sounds horrendous! Makes me feel so annoyed with people like this pet shop owner they dont deserve the privelage.
