Good luck - hope you find a lovely kitty. I have 3 girls aged 9, 4 and nearly 2 and they have always had animals around them and as such are fantastic with them. All of our cats love our girls and have never had any reason to be fearful or reticent at all

Hope this helps

Re: Wanted...Kitten!

I think if you have a look at a few breeds that take your fancy then do alot of research on them before hand so you know what to expect..

I agree that if a young child is taught how to respect and treat an animal correctly, that they can live happily along side each other.

What breeds have you been looking at?

Re: Wanted...Kitten!

Its a nice idea to try & re-home kittens/cats but when we were looking most re-homing centres had signs up that they couldn't be re-homed if you had children under 15 years

We homed our first ped when our son was only 18 months old & yes we did have to watch him just as you would a young child.

He soon learnt to be respectful & caring and at the grand age of 4 he now helps with feeding & caring for the cats.

Perhaps it's the breed I chose but Bengals are described as 'bomb proof'

As long as you are a responsible parent It shouldn't put you off owning a pet just because you have young children.

Goodluck

Re: Wanted...Kitten!

Theres nothing wrong with kittens and children as long as you think that the child is grown-up to help look after it...our daughter is 5 and wev had cats since she was 6 months old..with no problems.

and must moggies get re-homed around 8 weeks but a proper breeder with pedigrees wont let them go before 13 weeks...

maybe you should think about getting a moggie for now and see how that goes before spending out on a pedigree that isnt right for your family..

good luck..

Re: Wanted...Kitten!

I personally won't let kittens go in the two weeks before and week after Christmas as I think there is too much going on in everyone's households at that time and bearing in mind it is a bit stressful for a kitten going to a new home anyway. Sadly, I saw someone advertising Ragdoll kittens ready to go Christmas Eve - I thought that was really awful. How could they do that?

I do think if a young child is taught to respect a kitten/cat and is supervised there is no reason why they shouldn't have one but I am not sure Christmas is the right time to get one - perhaps just after Christmas when all the excitement has died down...

We are liking the Snowshoes and the Persians.....but want one that will suit us, and they will be happy around us too.
I don't know what characteristics these breeds have...but as I say, I want them to be happy!!!

We are preferably after a female that is litter trained and been vacinated etc and is as young as can be! We also have a very loveable dog who doesn't mind cats at all!!!

We are willing to travel for the ideal cutie!!!

Thanks in Advance
I wish you luck in finding the right kitten for your family and reading through the posts on here I think you do understand the responsibilty involved and I'm sure your little girl will be supervised as far as possible.
I have grown up children and one teenager who have all grown up with cats and do not find the mix impossible. I just want to add though if your new cat lives to good age it will be at a difficult time for your daughter who will probably be in her late teens when inevitably the cat dies. I know not a nice thing to think about but one of my cats died in my sons arms when he was 10 (son not cat -cat was 13) and it is very hard for children to go through that. Sorry to be morbid.
On another note you mention Persians which take an awful lot of grooming so you need to think carefully about the breed you decide on. Good luck anyway

aww a similar thing happened with us.. my Mum rescued a kitten when she was pregnant with me and he lived untill he was 21.. I was heartbroken when we had to have him put to sleep!

Re: Wanted...Kitten!

Hi,

Good luck with finding the right cat for you. Dont rule out getting a moggy...i have 6 and they are wonderful cats all with individual loving personalities.

I also have a little boy whos 4 and he has grown up with our cats from being born and he is great with them, never once hads he chased them, hot them grabbed at them or caused them any discomfort. I think it is important to introduce children to the responsibilities of having a pet and caring for them.

I also have a little girl who is 7 months and she loves our cats...gets very excited when she sees them, but cats arnt stupid if they feel uncomfortable in a situation they will just move away from it.

I think its a great idea....just supervise your child with you pet and it should be ok.

Re: Wanted...Kitten!

Im so glad that others have stuck up for families with young children and young kittens!!!! Ive got 4 kids, youngest two are 2yrs and 3yrs old and ive got 4 kittens. Both of my children are brilliant with them, some kids can be a bit rough to start with but usually get bored of the new kitten very quickly anyway!! I agree that christmas is not the best time to get a kitten or any other pet really- too stressfull. Good luck with whatever you decide.
