New owner with allergy?

One of my kittens went to his new home sunday, hes fine but his new owner is suffering pretty badly with an allergic reaction to him. other than taking antihistamines is there anything else he could try.

Can an allergy wear off? When we had our dog i was covered head to toe with a rash, the longer weve had him the less allergic i seem to have become.

Re: New owner with allergy?

My little sis suffers with a cat allergy but my mum would rather get rid of Sam than the cat!

My Mum hoovers every day and grooms Nemo every day in the utiliy room so the hairs dont fly around the house..

It's helped quite a bit

Re: New owner with allergy?

I take antihistamines and nose spray ect. I used to be allertic to any cat, even if it was'nt in a house just being inside would make me bad. Now I hardly have any problems at all, over the years I guess i've become immune. Just as well really with having semi-longhairs, lol

Re: New owner with allergy?

Hi Jens

I've been doing alot of research into allergies and pets as I took in a stray but my sister has an allergy to cats! At the moment she lives outside but I'm hoping to start bringing her in at night time.

As the owner gets used to the cat the allergy may calm down.
Otherwise try the following:

1.0Don't let the pet in the bedroom as the allergic person will basically be exposed to the allergy while they are sleeping which could be 8 hours per day.

2.Hoover the house every second day/ every day

3.Brush the cat every day - preferably outside the house.

4. Apparently there's something called a Love Glove which you can run over furniture every day and will pick up the animal hairs etc - I can't get one in Ireland though !

5. You can get a spray called method which you can spray the furniture with and prevents dander from floating - it's the dander most people are allergic to.

6. Get removable covers for the cats bed and wash regularly

These are a few tips which should help but there's also a wealth of info out there which the person could look into !

Re: New owner with allergy?

I definately beleive if you are allergic to pets but own them you build up more of a immunity ,my sister and brother have bad exzema and asthma but my mum always had cats ,my sister now has 4 cats and isnt to bad but if she comes to my house her eyes puff up and she cant breath due to my dogs my brother when he left home hasnt got any pets and cannot come to mine or sisters due to our pets as he would have an instant asthma attackI really think the body adjusts its just wether the person is willing to suffer the uncomfortablness it causes

Re: New owner with allergy?

Not to want to contradict people, as yes cat fur does cause allergies, but this is more common with asthematics.
People who are not asthematic and allergic to cats are very often allergic to something in the saliver. As a cat cleans themselves it obviously gets on the fur that way too.

Okay some tips:
As already said, keep the cat away from the bedrooms, when I was younger, my dad would not allow my cats in the upstairs of the house, cats lern rules pretty fast and so correct discipline, these cats will know their boundaries.

Keep the cats of the furniture, sofa etc, don't worry, cats are perfectly comfortable on the floor.

When the cat is old enough, allow it outside (obviously a bit of a problem if its a pedigree).

Possibilty of bathing the cat should clean the saliver and the allergen off of the cat.

Girls are better than boys for producing less of the allergen, something to do with testosterone (and have you seen how much the boys drool when they are happy!)

And of course hoover the house and wash the cats bedding frequently.

Re: New owner with allergy?

My suggestions are much the same as everyone else, but i have heard that some people are alergic to the dead skin that cats molt and regula baths can help this.

Re: New owner with allergy?

I do know a bunny breeder that used to be allergic to any animal with fur, continued contact did get rid of her allergy, she has even stopped over at mine without getting a reaction and now has a dog, cat and loads of bunnies
