Question Thinking about getting a Devon Rex, any advice would be great

Hi all

I'm thinking about getting a Devon Rex. My other half is asmatic which means we can't have a traditional furry cat, so i was wondering whether a Devon Rex would be suitable. Also, do they like small dogs (Dachshunds in particular). Any advice about this breed would be great.

Only way to know for sure is to visit a breeder & see if you have an allergy.

My friend has allergies but she's fine with her cornish rex. Devon rexes are good with allergies too but they can be a bit too lively and energetic for some people!

Defo check with a breeder first for allergies. But if you have a dog already then consider a Devon Rex as getting another dog and you will be on the right track!!

yes, this is my thought, and i like the quirky nature and look of the rex. i suppose it would be sensible to find a local breeder. `do we know if the rex will get on with a dog in general?

Re: Thinking about getting a Devon Rex, any advice would be great

Devons are amazing! I have terrible allergies to almost all animal fur as well as severe asthma but I have been a proud Devon Rex owner for ten years now. I took steps to ensure success that you may or may not find necessary....

1. Eliminated as many other allergy/asthma triggers in my house as possible (even extremely mild ones) like having all detergents/cleaning products w/o perfumes. Most fabric softeners are made of animal fat and can irritate allergies. I also bought air purifiers for the two rooms that I spend the most time in.This will help to lower histamine levels which will allow greater tolerance for other triggers.

2. Devons are much more like dogs than most cat breeds. My personal experience is that if they are trained for regular baths that are done correctly/rewarded they learn to love them. We used to wash ours once a month but over the years I have stretched this to see how my asthma would react. If the weather is nice & we take walks with the leash/harness then the baths increase (my boy likes to roll in the dirt until his white fur turns gray). If the cats stay indoors only then one bath every several months is fine. But Devons our are so playful and want to do what we are doing so they often try to get in the shower or bath with the humans.

3. Cat litter has been a big issue with my asthma. The very best cat litter for my asthma is perfume free crystals. I have tried many other cheaper and more expensive litters. I have tried more convenient clumping and flushable litters. I have tried the more environmentally friendly choices like paper or wood pellets. ALL of these have been the worst issues when it comes to allergy/asthma tolerance. Even when I have not been told of the change my asthma flairs within hours. If you do nothing else I think this is the most important step.

4. There are designated "cat nests" in every room of our home that are machine washable blankets/pillows and washed frequently.

5. I take prescribed allergy/asthma medication daily

5. Last, I don't allow the cats to bathe on my bed and if they lick me or I get a cat scratch then I wash right away.

I have taken so many precautions because I love animals. Like I said you may not need to do so much but by taking all of these steps I am even able to let the cats sleep in my bed with me. Sorry, if this is more info than you wanted but I hope it helps.

Oh! & for the dog thing? If you find a breeder that has raised the kittens with a dog in the house then you will already know that the kitten has been adjusted to life with a dog.

Good luck!

Devons have very quirky natures to match their looks and almost all Devon owners I've known have also owned dogs

Do make sure they are health tested - I'm not sure if this is the case nowadays but they had some issues with genetic complaints - if I remember rightly, haemophilia is one..... There may be other tests needed as well now.
