Advice Needed about a kitten

Hi all,

I really could do with some advice, I am british living in Portugal, here they have a lot of stray cats, where I work we have a stray cat who has had kittens, where they were hiding was in the middle of a buliding site a few people rescued some of the kittens and the mother then disapeared on Thursday so i have taken one of the kittens too. I took the kitten yesterday!! straight to a vet where i live who has started the worming treatment and we are back in a month to start injections so to me the kitten is around 4 or 5 weeks old. She is really healthy and eating solid mushy food. We took her home yesterday after buying everything possible, food, cosy bed, toys, litter tray etc etc. I am just really really really worried as both myself and partner work full time. We had her sleep with us last night and she did cry most of the night which I was expecting, but she is exploring our apartment and eating well, I just need to help her to do poo poo as the vet advised.

Today I have kept her in the kitched for like 5 minutes on its own on and off to try to get it used to being on its own, but it crys and crys as misses her mummy so much, and i am going to put her bed in the kitchen tonight with all her food etc, and I am expecting her to cry all night, but I cant have her in the bed and get used to this habit. My partner will be off work on Monday but by Tuesday we will both be out of the house for 8 9 hurs a day. As she is so young and been taken away from her mummy a lot sooner than she should I am so worried If we are the right people to look after her. I have safe proofed my kitchen and really want to keep her but I dont want to make her unhappy, can anyone offer any advise

Thank you

Re: Advice Needed about a kitten

Oh bless you, I have seen all the stray cats in Portugal and there is loads. The kitten is very young and will be missing the mother that is why there is all the crying. All you can do is comfort the kit as much as possible and if the kit is feeding ok then keep up with the same food. Your vet has obviously told you about how to make sure they are going to the toilet ok, so I would say just keep up with what you are doing, make sure the kitten is eating and you will have a lovely pet for your home there. C.x.

Hi and again, god bless you,you clearly are right for this kitt as you and hubby were chosen-otherwise she/he would've been with someone else right nowWhilst you are there try leaving a radio/tv on low for her/him and maybe a few teddybears,he/she is probably just a bit confused/scared right now and as long as they are eating/going to the loo ,then they will be fine,do keep us updated if you can and the very best with your new found kinship

Re: Advice Needed about a kitten

Thank you so much for all your comments. We have named her Princess, and she is doing ok. she is eating very well, and done her first poo yesterday in her litter tray!! We left her last night in her bed in the kitchen she was fine, she ate her food and left a poo and wees in her litter tray. I feel a lot more confident about leaving her while we are at work. We are giving her lots of cuddles and playing when we are here so I hope she will be fine.

We are going to leave the TV on low to see if it helps, thanks so much for your kind comments, first day at work will be Tuesday so we shall see how it goes. :-)

Ahhh, what a lovely story. Good on you for taking Princess in. She sounds like shes finding her feet already. Leaving a radio or tv on is a good idea too
