Is there a link between coat colour and personality?

Hi everybody

I am looking to get a British Shorthair (or two!) and have heard anecdotal evidence that there is a link between the cat's coat colour/pattern and their temperament.

Does anybody (particularly those who are familiar with the BSH breed) have a view on this from their experience?

Thanks for reading...

I didn't know but when we got Nala (a tortie & white female) everyone we spoke to including the vet said oooh the terrible torties. Apparently they have quite a fiery temperament and like to do their own thing. Also a few people have said the tabbies can be quite mad

Naughty torties are the only one I know of.

I agree only heard it with Torties I have two and the're both mad. One I was hoping to show as she is perfect type but I couldn't take her anywhere near a show. I've got cats of different colours and patterns but it is only the Torties that cause the problems.

Re: Is there a link between coat colour and personality?

My tortie is okay but on her last show report, they did mention she had a tortie moment which is most unlike her as she is a very relaxed & laid back lady.

I know plenty of other torties that aren't, however. Mine must be the exception that makes the rule.

Re: Is there a link between coat colour and personality?

Thanks for the replies so far. Am sure there are always exceptions to the rule, but sounds like if I want a more laid back cat then might be best to get something other than a tortie!

Does anyone have experience of the blues, lilacs or creams? Or the bi-coloureds?

Cheers!

Also the colour-points (which I think do look very pretty)?

Tortie aside, I think you'd find that they are similar & the choice would be down to what colour you prefer to look at!

Re: Is there a link between coat colour and personality?

I have to agree about torties and tabbies, the vast majority are slightly mad in the nicest possible way.

As for the other colours I don't think there is alot of difference. You get some people that will swear blind that a certain colour is like this or that, but then thats really just their experience with that colour.

I agree with Messyhearts you should pick a colour you like the look of.

Re: Is there a link between coat colour and personality?

I have a blue girl and a cream colourpoint boy. My girl likes to be left alone and is quite sedate most of the time whereas my boy is very playful and affectionate. When I chose them at 3 weeks old the breeder predicted these personalities due to their colouring and she was spot on. I expect there are people on here who will have different experiences though.
