Sad News
As many of you know my cat Poppy gave birth 7 weeks ago, everything was fine and she managed it all on her own. Well....my other cat, Lily gave birth unexpectedly during the night on Friday (we didnt think she was due till next week) Thankfully i woke up at 4am and went to loo. Only to find her in the spare room with 2 kitten on the bed settee - one was dead and the other was very very cold. Lily wasnt with them and had gone off the other side of the couch. I was very upset about the dead kitten but went into emergency mode and managed to warm up the other kitten and get Lily to take her. About 15 minutes later she gave birth to a stillborn kitten (it wasnt formed properly and had no fur). Over the next 2 hours she gave birth to another 3 very small but healthy kittens.
The remaining 4 kittens are doing really well - still very small but getting bigger every day. We have got 2 snow spotted bengals and 2 brown spotted bengals. Lily herself is a very small cat and she wasnt really that big - it was a shock that she had been carrying 6 kittens. Do you think this is why the other 2 died? Was there just not enough room etc for them all? i feel so guilty about it all - i cant help feeling that if i was with her i could have done something to help the perfectly formed dead kitten. I dont know whether it was dead when it was born or whether it died cos Lily had left him on the settee and it was cold. What do you think? ![]()

Re: Sad News
I think you will send yourself crazy if you go down that road, and deffinatly should not be blaming yourself!
How fantastic that you managed to warm up the second born! 4 beautiful kittens! You must be soooo proud of mum! I am no vet, but i really don't think the size of your cat would have been a problem, my cat fell pregnant at 3 1/2 months and gave birth to 5 kittens. (i lost one as he had a cleft pallet, but this is nothing to do with her size). Chin up hun, just take joy in your georgus little ones! |

Re: Sad News
Ahhh, Kelsie, i'm really sorry. You said they were'nt due until next week ? That is probably why, especially as one had no fur. They've been born premature. Kittens, sadly unlike humans don't always survive a prem birth. She would of known they had no chance. I wish you the best of luck with the others. You could always give a helping hand to feed them

Re: Sad News
Thanks guys! It was a good job that i was there for the others cos i think she was confused and wasnt doing anything. I helped her with the 2nd & 3rd kittens and i had to break the sack and clear their airways. After she had the 4th kitten she was fine and cleaned it all up then started feeding them all. I was worried that i was going to loose them all. Lily just didnt seem to be bother about them at all.
Shes settled down well now and is looking after them - shes even looking after Poppy's kittenes (i think, she thinks that all the kittens are hers now) Poppy doesnt mind sharing though - its quite cute really that they are sharing motherhood.

Re: Sad News
Kelsie love-you did well in the circumstances, and don't go down the road of if's and buts..you'll drive yourself demented and you have a mum and kitts that need your help
keep a close eye on mum and babies-hopefully you won't need to intervene but again better to be safe-do let us know how things go and very good luck for all of you![]() |

Re: Sad News
You did well Kelsie. You are not the first one this has happened to and you won't be the last. You coped really well under the circumstances and I hope the four kittens continue to thrive. I would be interested to know if she is a first time mum? I have had this happen to a new mum before and it appeared almost as though panic had set in to have them in irregular places. Also does sound as if they were a bit prem with the underformed kitten. Keep up the good work with both mums. C.x.

Re: Sad News
Yes you did extremely well to save the life of that little kitten
Well done!Even if you are present at the birth from start to finish, things can and do go wrong. Unfortunately for some babies life just wasn't meant to be ![]()

Re: Sad News
Hi Kelsie - I could not have put it better than everyone else. We all start to blame ourselves when we lose a baby asking the usual "what if..?" questions. I think you have done a grand job in helping your queen to raise them thus far.
Try to look on the positive side. You and your queen have come through the experience. You have 2 lovely snow spotted and 2 sweet little brown spotted bengal kittens. They are doing well and are looking lovely. Not going to preach so will just send a nice warm Cyber Hug and best purrs ((((Kelsie, Lily and her four little babies))))) ![]() |
