Smokers vs non smokers

This is a controversial one. Whilst filling in a message about my criteria for homing kittens, one of my thoughts on possible reasons for home or not homing a kitten was that a breeder may decide that his/her babies should not have to live in a house where there are smokers living there (or even frequent visitors).

I realise that people who smoke are more often than not clean people who keep very nice clean homes for their families and pets. They have been targeted a great deal by transport/employers/entertainment areas and asked to have their ciggies outside (in the rain).

What do you all think about this? Do you smoke? Would you let a kitten go to a home where smokers live? If not why not? If so why?

I am just looking for personal opinions here and not asking for laws to be laid down. I realise that each has to live the way they choose. Lets keep it civilised.

Re: Smokers vs non smokers

Interesting one this Ra I must admit it's not something i've thought about. We personally don't smoke, and last years kittens bar one went to smoke free owners. The one that did, they don't smoke in the house( I know cause she's a friend). So far this years kittens have smoke free owners....not that i've asked, but people tend to tell you about themselves, lol. All I ask for in my owners is a loving, indoor, forever home for my babies

Oh no. I couldn't possibly insist that my new owners were smoke - free.. that's just going too far.

I used to smoke - don't now - hate it in enclosed spaces.

Yes Wendy, agree - the most important thing is that the baby is loved and cared for in a nice permanent home.

Re: Smokers vs non smokers

I am a smoker and am not a breeder but my mother who is a non smoker is disgusted by the fact that i smoke round my animals. In the front room a window is always open and we have a window on the landing which is always open a smidge and When we have guests a lot of people dont actually know we smoke because our house doesn't smell.
I dont really see a problem with it i think the only time i'd see a problem is if u knew 100% that the new owner was subjecting the kitten to the smoke i.e blowing it in their face then i wouldn't be happy about them going to smokers homes.

Re: Smokers vs non smokers

We're not bad people HONEST but why do I feel as if Im a criminal

I choose to smoke and for the time being I still have that right especially in my own home.

Nevertheless Im fully aware of all the non smokers out there and Im quite happy to toe the line regarding where I can and cant smoke in public places

My cats are all fit and healthy, they never see a vet unless for routine things like boosters etc. Personally as long as a cat has a loving and permanent environment to live in that should be all that matters.

Im sure there are worse things out there that could happen to a cat than having an owner that likes an occasional ciggie

Re: Smokers vs non smokers

Personally i think telling your buyers that they have to be non smokers is going a bit too far.

I can understand the arguements over this one though. After all, you wouldnt want to smoke near human babies - so why cats?

On the other hand - i used to smoke (but gave up 2 years ago). So if I were to say no dont home them to smokers then i would be a hypocrite!

I know the cats dont have much choice as they will be inhaling it - but not heard of it causing problems to cats??

Re: Smokers vs non smokers

of course i'd let them go to a home with a smoker! at the end of the day i wouldn't sell a kitten to the sort of person who would purposly blow smoke in the kittens face. so smoker or not they'd have to be the best person in the world ever LOL....

Re: Smokers vs non smokers

Both myself and my oh are guilt-free smokers in our home and it's in honesty not a factor in vetting our potential new kitty familiesInteresting topic and i would say it depends on you..if you personally feel so strongly about this matter, then as always it is your right as breeder to take such a fact into consideration or notHowever i do feel a tad responsible/guilty as it was my goodself who lit and handed our Rosie her 1st afterbirth fag-she now demands one after each litter and Angel was mithering for 2's upBut would've felt worse if she'd had an after**** fag-so it's not all bad
