Need loads of info on introducing cat to a dog

Ok, we are looking to move (hopefully) to a lovely big house with the biggest garden i have ever seen
So me and my oh decided it would be a great idea to get a dog to make the best use of the garden and also to make our family bigger + to have a dog which scares people with bad ideas away from the property.
I m the type of person i would never keep just one dog...it has to be 2! (At least)
So double the trouble i think (but hope not).
How would i introduce the cats to the dogs?
I am mostly scared about the dog injuring the cats or anything like that.
Or the cats injuring the dog by attacking it???
Im kinda scared to make the decision to get dogs as i dont want to have my cats living the life of hell.
Anyone experience with this situation please help!
I wasnt sure if i should post this on here or the dog section

No advice as I haven't got a dog ... yet.

Just wanted to say how exciting and good luck with the dogs, cats and the move.

Hi Nat, good news on the house, you lucky thing
Post it on both, i'm sure nobody will mind lol.
Not sure what to suggest really. I've never had a problem with our dog. Even as a pup he never chased or bothered the cats. He loves them. He washes any kittens we have and is quite happy to share his bed with any of the cats. Yes we've had hissing ect with new cats from non dog homes, but he knows not to bother them til they come to him. Training is a big must from day 1 with puppies. They need to know what is allowed and what is not. I find Ridgebacks very laid back anyway. If we had the space I would of had more than one, lol.

It does take a lot, but as long as you are consistant and keep reinforcing the commands/training, it's well worth it in the end

I don't think it takes a lot really, I take it you're getting pups? As with any pup the first command they should learn is "NO". Once you have that they quickly learn not to harrass the cats.

Our pups were brilliant pretty much from day one. Jayjay was a very bouncy pup and got told off by Alvey on day one so that put an end to that, he's never really bothered with them since then! Trinny was never really bothered but now she loves them and gives them kisses every time they are reunited after walks, bed time etc. Both Jayjay and Milo act as if the cats don't exist apart from when the cats come to them for a love.

We have new dogs coming in on weekly basis and 9/10 are brilliant with the cats, the 1/10 quickly learn to respect them, one way or another!

As AJ said, it really doesn't take a lot and presuming your new dog will be bought as a puppy, then it's up to you to set the ground rules and ensure that the puppy knows that chasing the cats etc. is not allowed.

We bought a Rottie puppy last year and had no problems at all between him and our cats. Even when we have the kittens running around the home, Jag knows he is not allowed to chase them. Mind you, prior to buying Jag, we looked specifically for a breeder who was breeding dogs with fantastic temperaments.

And if you get a, sorry two pups from a breeder with cats, they should have done the hard work for you!
