Kitty Claws

Hey,

Another quick question about our new kitty. She is crazy and full of energy but her little claws are deadly! I wondered what everyones experience was with clipping nails? How easy/hard is it? And other than the nail clippers (which I bought from the pet store already).. is there anything else I will need? Do you guys in fact clip your cats nails!?

I had a budgie tears ago and I remember clipping his nails was a worrying experience; one snip too far and you would hurt him

Many thanks.

Same goes for a cat I had them down to a fine art when they came in the grooming parlour I used to use a damp towel over the cat with just his leg out and then push on his toe and clip the nail they are quite easy to see the quick. The ones that were done regularly used to just lay on the table for me to do them after a while.

Re: Kitty Claws

Its usually easier in the long run if you get kitty used to this at a young age, have two people first time, and clip of the sharp ends, you should be able to see the vein running through the claw,be careful not to cut this.Claw clippers may be to big and clumsy at this stage,if so use normal human nail clippers.good luck!

Re: Kitty Claws

Thanks for the super-fast replies! Will try it with me and the other half then. Anika is content to have me play with her paws so I think it should be ok so long as I dont clip the wrong bit!

Re: Kitty Claws

You could just glue some claw covers on her?

Seriously though, definatly have two people first time, one to hold and reassure her and the other to do the dirty work!

Hahaha, now, now aj, lol

No advice different from whats said already

I clip my cats claws all the time. For shows we have to have them done, they can disqualify you if you don't. It's for everyones safety, if they get spooked and freak out. I have special little cat clippers, they're great even for young kittens.

Re: Kitty Claws

I haven't had kttens or cats claws clipped but I would ask the vet last time for a puppy it cost £10, I am not confident doing it myself.

Re: Kitty Claws

We do all of our own cats' claws (when I can be bothered lol). I use ordinary human nail clippers though as I find the pet clippers too cumbersome for very fine claws. You do have to try and get them used to this early on. When your baby is on your lap sleeping, just gently stroke her paws and paw pads so she gets used to you touching her paws, and you will eventually be able to cut her claws while she is sleeping on your lap

Re: Kitty Claws

I've clipped my kitten nails without a problem and he's only been with me for a week. He didn't seem to mind it, but i did it when he was quite sleepy, maybe it's not a good idea if they're in a playful mode

You got it in one there Trish We always do our cats' claws when they are relaxed. Apart from when we are showing and then I just grab 'em on the morning of the show and do them then whether they are playing or not lol
