Any color cats can be any sex!

And if there's anyone who thinks differently you can have a read of this very in depth article which explains the genetics relating to the color the cat will turn out to be - it's actually very interesting but quite long...

Tortoiseshell and Tricolour Cats

Hope this helps
Emily

Re: Any color cats can be any sex!

Haha, Emily, you beat me too it, lol. I was gonna put up a colour genetics thing, that was one of them Some people think only girls can be torties, or boys can only be Red. There are Tortie boys...very rare, but they are out there Reds are linked to the parents genetics, I have 3 Red boys in my litter and they could only be boys from that particular mating, but there are plenty of Red girls out there

Re: Any color cats can be any sex!

My cat Star is a girl and she's ginger even vets have made the assumption she is male - wanted to add a pic but the computer is going really slow and I don't think it's going to let me!

I've never seen a tortie boy but wanted to point out the very rare possibility.

Emily

Yippee here she is...

Re: Any color cats can be any sex!

I believe (but you may correct me) that a tortie boy will actually be sterile, this is because although he appears to have boy bits, he would be i guess what we would call a homaphradite (excuse spelling)
Females have an XX chromosome, and males have an XY chromosome, however a tortie male will have an XXY chromosome.

Re: Any color cats can be any sex!

I think many people also think that you cannot get ginger females. Which is also false. You can get ginger females, however, i believe they need to have both ginger parents, which is what makes them less common than ginger males.

Both parents don't need to be Red

Found this, it's very interesting

On September 20, 2001 a very special litter was born at the Norewegian Forest Cattery Abelia , in a suburb of Paris in France. It was the second litter of this queen, with the same father. The first litter had been 2 girls and 2 boys, and this second litter seemed to be more of the same. Born were a black smoke boy, a crême with white boy that unfortunately did not survive, and a blue tortie with white girl (Neroli, on the left), and a black calico with white girl (Patchouli, on the right). BOTH these girls turned out to be ... boys!
And, the day after he turned 11 months old, Neroli became the father of 3 blue kittens: 2 boys and 1 girl. So he gives his kittens the black gene, and also carries dilution.
Patchouli emigrated to Germany, and has thrown two litters. Of one litter, Sonja Rose d'Abelia is the mum, a blue mackerel queen (a 23). The litter consisted of two boys and two girls: one black tortie, and the other blue tortie. So Patchouli gives his kittens ... red, and he also carries dilution!

Re: Any color cats can be any sex!

I wish I was better at Science because it's taking me a long time to read and digest all these facts - it's lovely though that this is happening and in some cases are hard to explain even with genetics.
I suppose it's like my daughter having blue eyes which are recessive when my husband has brown and I have green - generally meaning that brown would dominate but with her it just didn't follow the rule.
I would be so proud owning one of the Tom's on that site as they are all stunning.
Star's mother wasn't red but her Grandmother was - I think you need to know the line much further back to be sure what colors cats carry - I may be wrong.

Gosh this is all so interesting!
I assume this is very rare? Or is it not as rare as people think?
