How do I get my new kitten to use the litter tray and eat??

Hi,
I'm after advice. I brought home my new kitten yesterday and did as the breeder said and put her in a quiet room, where her litter tray and food/water was etc. I showed her exactly where everything was. She is yet to use the litter tray and as far as food is concerned, the only thing she wanted to eat was lick the inside of a chinese takeaway. She is though drinking the water.

12 hours later and she still hasn't used the litter tray or eaten any food.

Is this normal, should I just go with the flow?

I assume you have not put the food/water right next to the litter tray (kittens/cats will refuse to eat from food bowls placed too close to where their dirty litter tray is placed) - so perhaps she is still taking time to settle in. Did the person you get her from suggest any favourite foods for the kitten? Tiny portions are best at first - I know it sounds mean but if you offer a very small amount - say a teaspoonful to start with, then it does not look too daunting for the kitten and she will eat it. Once she has polished that off, you can always offer more. Once she has eaten a bit, she will soon want to use the litter tray.

Best purrs

Re: How do I get my new kitten to use the litter tray and eat??

I got my kitten last sunday and he did not use the litter tray for about 48 hrs i was getting worried, he is using it regurarly now and i have even moved it to where it's meant to be, he finds it without a problem, i haven't had any accidents.

With the food, i was going to give him felix, only for the first couple of days since it's what the breder as been feeding and then change to applaws and royal canin but somehow when i did put it down he smelled it and turned his back, innitialy i thought he wasn't hungry but he kept going back to the food bowl and not eating, so i tried to give him applaws instead and he eat it like a little lion

good luck

Re: How do I get my new kitten to use the litter tray and eat??

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies. She is actually using the litter tray now, though only wet soiling, but it's a step forward.

Food isn't quite as easy. I have given her a little bit of the food the breeder recommended but have now changed flavour to see if that makes a difference. She seems to like human food, particularly chopped up bacon rind and cheese, so am starting to mix that in with the pouch food, in her bowl.

Watch this space.:
