Can we put the litter in a bathtub?

Hi

Lawrence and Elena here and this is our first post. Hello

We are thinking of getting two cats, a Siberian and a Ragdoll. We will be buying them from breeders as soon as we find breeders that can deliver both at about the same time. These will be our first ever pets.

We live in a one bedroom apartment and we are slightly worried about space. So much so in fact we are wondering where to put the cat litter. We would really like to buy this CatGenie - The World's Only Self-Flushing, Self Washing Cat Box as it is self cleaning so no mess (hopefully). Can anyone recommend it?

One problem though, the only place we seem to have space for it is in the bathtub. It is a normal sized bathtub. Has anyone every placed cat litter in a bathtub before? Will the cats be able to reach it when they are younger or older? We will probably be getting the kittens at 12 weeks or more.

Many thanks for your help.

If you use the bath then I wouldn't do it whatsoever. With my cats, I use litter liners in their trays so without that you would be looking at cat pee & poo stains on your bath tub & that isn't too hygienic to share or practical if you use it frequently.

we have a small house and can fit 4 litter trays in,they dont exactly take up much room!!as for the bath,i wouldnt think that was a good idea at all we have 2 in our tiny bathroom, one next to the bath, one next to the loo.as for self cleaning trays, well its ot somethingi would bother with, there will be a lot of maintenence involved, may as well get normal trays!

We don't plan on using the bathtub at all so this won't be a problem. In addition, the Cat Genie is meant to be self cleaning so there should ideally be no pee or poo in the tub.

We are trying to avoid the mess involved with normal litter. We know dealing with this mess is part and parcel of pet ownership but if something like the Cat Genie can spare that then we would prefer that option.

Some of these fancy self cleaning litter trays are far more trouble than they are worth. A breeder friend bought one of the littermaids and she said it was a nightmare to clean - especially if the cats had a runny bum! She sent it back.

I would stick to a normal tray - there are so many different types available,

products new home - Booda Cleanstep Litter Tray
These are pretty cool or
Litter Trayz & Essentials : Pinky Pawz - Simply ... the cats whiskers!, Pinky Pawz - Simply ... the cats whiskers!

If you do a search there are just dozens of different kinds.

As you are planning on perhaps a Siberian and Ragdoll I would go for a large tray.

If you give me an idea of where you are in the country I could perhaps recommend some reputable registered Ragdoll breeders to you. Just PM me

Re: Can we put the litter in a bathtub?

Hello,
I have two Coonies and my litter tray lives very happily in the bathtub. I didnt put it in there until they were about 6 months though, but they seem perfectly happy with the arrangment! It is a bit of a pain when i want to take bath obviously have to take out and do a quick rinse of bath but otherwise works well for me.
Hope that helps
Em xxx

A tray in the tub would be fine but I'd hate to think of the smears on the tub if you don't use one...

Re: Can we put the litter in a bathtub?

Although I prefer standard open litter trays with no frills (LOL!) i.e. no liners or anything, just plain trays, clumping litter which is easy to scoop - I actually think the Cat Genie is a great idea, its nothing like the Littermaid, which is is a disaster as far as litter trays go. The Cat Genie is actually plumbed in, it scoops and liquidises solids, washes, disinfects, and then hot air drys the re-usable granules.

I'd say go for it - I would consider it but its expensive and plus I have 11 cats - so the queue for the 'bathroom' could be a problem!! If you do decide to install one, do let us know how you get on with it.

Re: Can we put the litter in a bathtub?

I recommend the Litter Kwitter

We've had Enzo using this toilet training system since we got him and he is doing fantastic!

Litter Kwitter Toilet Training Kit for Cats with DVD by Doogie's | Pets at Home

No mess (unless your kitties like to throw litter everywhere!!!) and very little litter used, eventually none (when your kitties are toilet trained). Excellent!
