Best Kitten Diet

Boo is 5 months old.

We adopted him yesterday and (much to my displeasure) we are currently feeding him on he food he was getting at the Cat's Protection foster home he was at.

This is Iams (urgh!) Kitten biscuits and Whiskas (URGH!!) Kitten sachets.

He grazes on the Iams but goes mental for his Whiskas, which is really causing me trouble as our current cat lives on Orijen with half a can to a can of Applaws wet food a day as a treat and for some extra moisture.

Orijen says it's fine for kittens over 7 weeks on the bag, and I have bought him some applaws kitten. As Bella is thriving these two foods and we regret not always feeding them to her.

Are there any other kitten foods worth trying? Or do you think Orijen + Applaws will be fine for him?

I think its whatever works for you and for the new kitten... i have had to try several different types of food as one of our kittens has an intolerance to grain/rice/cereals that you find in some foods. We're currently on Hills ID pouches but moving them onto Bozita wet cartons (which are fab - 93% meat content and v economical on cost) and applaws dry 80% chicken content with no cereal in it etc. But have had to get them off whiska's (which is what they were on when we got them and am convinced has caused the tummy probs) and they didnt settle well on Hi-life (very stinky poop!) and also Hills dry was no good either! But i think every cat is different?? I have heard lots and lots of good things about Orijen and applaws cans.

Thank you!

I think he will make me feel a bit guilty as he gets SO excited when it's Whiska's time, but then I get excited at Big Mac/Pizza time and I certainly wouldn't eat either of those on a daily basis!!

Awesome, I might try him with it then.

Is it fine for their stomachs etc? I like the fact I can get large cans of it, as I think he'll get through one a day. (And I can't find any toppers for the tiny Applaws tins)

I can only say that Bozita, so far, is working out good for my two. It's a process of trial and error to find the right sort of food - or so i have found! Bozita comes in a terapak carton of 360gms (for the pate sort - think the chunks in jelly is a carton of 370gms) which lasts up to two days and is self sealing once opened and can be stored in the fridge for two days. Its about £6.50 for 6 cartons and 6 cartons for my two lasts 8 days so is economical. Have a look on Zooplus to see what you think of it - there are reveiws on there from other people too which i found handy! But go with whatever brand you think suits you best - i cant say if it'll work for oyu just that i am finding it a good brand so far! Orijen and Applaws also have v good reviews too!

Re: Best Kitten Diet

Pets at home do their own make food called Purely, they do wet food in 12 x pouches (chicken and fish flavours - 50% meat content which is great) for £3.89 it is for cats and kittens. They also do two dry foods for kittens & cats 60% & 40% meat content) 2kg for £6.84
My two kittens love this range of food and also James Wellbeloved Turkey & Rice kitten food although this is only 26% meat content but my kittens still love it.

Re: Best Kitten Diet

I think I have the answer!

After having a nosey about online it seems that Natures:Menu kitten pouches are the best option at 71% pure chicken. I think I will get him a few boxes of these, and then let him have orijen and grown up applaws, as I can't see how it differs nutritionally from the kitten version.

Re: Best Kitten Diet

That's good. I have just been on the Pets at Home site and notice that they are also doing a Purely Pate which has 90% Chicken 125gm for 69p, I haven't tried this so cannot vouch for it yet.
