I miss him!

I feel i've made the wrong decision!
I have put my cat to sleep, i felt i was doing the right thing but now i'm feeling so much regret. He had a tumour in his stomach but he was in no pain, his belly had gotten really big with all the fluid surrounding the tumour and he mostly wanted to sleep but he still ate a little, maybe just under a sachet a day, he was still passing urine. They said they could drain the fluid off which could prolong his life but they couldn't say how long as in the end as he has got a terminal illness. I just keep seeing his lifeless body and i wish i had left it longer, he may have been a little different in himself but i feel he was quite happy just sleeping. I miss him so much and i can't stop crying. I don't feel like i said goodbye properly and i rushed into the decision before actually thinking about it. I know he wasn't going to be around forever but i feel i should of kept him with me until it felt like it was affecting him more, so that putting him asleep felt justified. He must of wondered why i was doing this to him. I feel so upset and sad. I wish i had kept him longer! I wish he was still here!

Re: I miss him!

I'm so sorry but don't feel guilty, you did the best for your baby out of love. At least he didn't suffer and was happy when he went to sleep.

I lost my Foxy on September 18th and still cry almost every day. I was force feeding him because he wasn't eating due to FIP and I can't help feeling guilty that this may have hastened his passing.

They leave a gap that can't be filled.

Re: I miss him!

There's never an easy answer to this one. If you had kept him going longer to the point where he was in pain, you would have regretted not having him pts before he suffered. I think you did right, and wish I had insisted that my old Bushel was pts when I took her to the vet rather than giving in and accepting treatment when he said she could go on longer. In the end she suffered in a way that could have been avoided.

Re: I miss him!

It is always the hardest decision to make having one of your babies PTS but I suspect deep down you know you made the right call; nevertheless it doesn't help you feel any better about it. If you had kept your baby going it would have been for you - not for him and he would have deserved better. So don't start beating yourself up about it; you made your decision with the best intentions and because you wanted the best for him.

Most of us have been in a similar position at some point.

The main thing to focus on now is all the happy memories of your baby - the times when he purred and played or lay next or on you. Think of how he made you smile or comforted you if you were down - if you can do that then he will always live on in your heart - a special cherished memory.

Re: I miss him!

I lost my 12 yr old cat in august. She had a tumour on her thyroid and liver problems. It was the hardest decision to make having her pts but she wouldnt take her tablets and on that last visit to vets she looked at me from her box as if to say i have had enough. I still wonder now if i made the right decision but know deep down she was ill and was only going to get worse. Sorry for your loss

Re: I miss him!

I'm sorry you're feeling so sad. It's very hard to choose the exact right moment for this decision, you just have to do what you think is right and it's worse to let the animal go on for too long than to let it go a bit sooner.

Re: I miss him!

Hun, please don't feel guilty, you did your beautiful cat a kindness. His last moments weren't filled with pain and distress. My sisters cat was diagnosed with chronic renal failure on Boxing Day last year and she fought to keep him alive. He only lasted another 3 weeks. After he'd gone to the rainbow bridge my sister said she'd wished she'd put him to sleep on boxing day when he'd been first diagnosed as his last weeks were full of suffering while she tried to rehydrate him with drips, force him to take tablets and countless trips to the vets. You made the right decision for your beautiful baby. I'm so sorry for your loss.
