Does your cat understand your words?

What words, phrases and body language do you regularly use that your cats understand?

I am an avid cook and spend lots of time in my kitchen. My cats understand that when I go into the kitchen then there is a good chance that I am going to feed them because that is where their food and water bowls are. But sometimes I am walking about with hot pans, knives, a kettle of boiling water, for example, and really do not need them to be around my ankles for their safety as well as my own. So on these very frequent occasions I stick my arm up in the air and say a stern and loud 'NO' and they leg it into the dining room.

They understand that 'Din Dins' means I am going to feed them and they will come running straight away when I say it.

They also understand 'No' if I am asleep and a paw reaches underneath the duvet to scratch my nose!

So what phrases etc does your cat understand?

Re: Does your cat understand your words?

One of our cats only seems to answer to her name and to "dinner". Another knows "tummy" and rolls over so I can rub his stomach, which he loves. And the third knows "kiss" and puts his head up for a kiss on the top of his head! My cats are a little odd!

Re: Does your cat understand your words?

They understand too much, unlike a dog that will respond as expected, a cat thinks, she wants me in but I'm staying here and just to be sure I will hide.

They understand breakfast and dinner meaning their food. When I call them in to play I shout "come on Boys and their Toys" meaning I am getting their favourite toy out of the cupboard, the Da Bird toy. They are usually sat at the cupboard before I have had chance to open it.

They understand Off meaning get down. They understand their names, Bellini is better than Duke our dog at coming to his name.

They copy more than I realised, my terror twins can open doors inward and outward, they can open the kitchen window too.

There is probably a lot more they understand but all my efforts in training is geared towards Duke rather than the cats.

They may understand no, but all that happens is they back off and then do whatever it was they were doing when I'm not looking. Little gits.

Sue

Re: Does your cat understand your words?

My cat Nussy understood 'no' 'come' and 'stay'. He would tell me when it was dinner time and if I said 'stop nagging, I know' he would think I'd said 'no' and I'd have to get up quickly and get his meal or he'd go out hunting.
I also trained him to think he was being given tablets as a reward for being a very good cat (using hoeopathic blanks from kittenhood) so dosing him was incredibly easy.
He went out one night about six years ago and never came back - probably hit by a car.

Re: Does your cat understand your words?

My cats understand that 'feed the cats', 'dinner', 'breakfast', 'tuna' and 'cats!' mean they are going to get fed! Lol

They know Get down! And Get out!

My girls understand when I say "who wants chicken " and "uh uh " and "do you want to go outside" and of course they understand "it's dinner time " and "want bikkies"

Re: Does your cat understand your words?

About 3 of mine answer to their names (Eric will in fact come if you call anybody!).
They know 'get down!', usually for when they are sat on the warm cable box and blocking the tv.
And a double clap means they have to leave whatever room they are in instantly, which they are mostly pretty good at.
Except Gracie the Ninja Kitten who will run out then bounce off a wall and run back in again!!Im hoping she gets calmer as she ages but as a tortie thats probably not likely.LOL

Re: Does your cat understand your words?

I don't think cats understand words, they recognize the tones you say words in. But I'm a pedant.

For example, if I look at either of my cats and say "Fridge" in the same tone I usually say their names, they'll come running.

Re: Does your cat understand your words?

Na!
No is just a noise they hear repeated ad nauseum.
Don't even answer to their names. Though that might be sheer bloody mindedness.
