New cat coming, any advice appreciated!

We are on the brink of cat ownership.

Any noob advice or warnings about what to expect would be appreciated.
It's a young adult (about 2yrs I think, is that adult in cat terms?), female cat, not sure whether it's been 'done'.

How do they tend to take to a new home? How long should we keep her in when we get her etc?

Cheers!

How wonderful you're getting a cat
Being two years old means she's a young adult
It depends on the cat what her reaction will be to her new home and family.
Some will hide, others will start exploring. If she hides, just let her for a while. Give her some time to adjust. You should have her stay inside for at least 6 weeks.
Don't forget to show her where you keep her litter tray though and keep it well away from her food and water.
What kind of other advice do you need?
Good luck with the new family member!!

Hello again

Do you know anything about the cats history? ie if she has been wormed? had her vaccinations? etc .... and ditto the advice about keeping her in for as long as possible really until she is used to it.

You will have to think of what food to give her to, I always leave dry biscuits down all day as well as feeding a pouch in the morning & evening.

Re: New cat coming, any advice appreciated!

i adopted a 18month old female a little while ago.

the one thing i really didnt realise was how much of your attention they want and how easily they get you wrapped around their paw!!

at this age they will be alot more independant than a kitten but still very playfull.

my girl was walking around as if she owned the place within 24hrs of getting here but i think it really depends on the personality.

Re: New cat coming, any advice appreciated!

I took a stray cat in, he was about 2 years old. He fit in like a glove.

I would keep him in for a few days, then walk with him round your garden on an empty stomach letting him get use to the smells and surroundings. After a shortwhile bring him in for his food.

Even with outdoor cats I had a litter tray.

Let him explore your home in his own time, he may be quite confident he may be a little unsure at first.

Oh I feel excited for you - I have butterflies.

Sue

Hi,

Cat is wormed, vaccinated and spayed. It turns out she is about 4yrs.

Some pics in case you haven't seen my other thread...

Yep!

She was a star all evening. We crated the pup, went to bed and shut the door, we chanced letting her have pretty much the run of the house but she was crying outside the bedroom door.
I opened the door, she padded about a bit then jumped on the bed and settled between my and OH's pillow.

She has been at home all day, hasn't ruined anything and appears only to have gone in her litter tray, what a fekking genius. Someone remind me why I prefer dogs!
