Unhappy next door kittens left outside

hi

my next door has got two kittens and I think they are about 4-5 months old . As I have one myself ( almost 7 months old ) I was happy to know that he will have some company . But about 2 weeks ago she fitted a cat flap into her shed door and ever since the little ones are left outside all day until very late in the evening , 8.30 - 9 p.m . I think she only feeds them in the morning before she goes to work . They've started to come to our house and we feed them , poor things are ravenous and they just want to curl up on the sofa . but our moggie is getting very jealous and is beating them up when they're out in the garden . i can't stop them coming in , it would break your heart to see them outside in rain , wind and cold . don't know if they have any heat in the shed or if she takes them in at all in the evenings.
i don't want to fall out with my neighbour either but she shouldnt have pets when she's not looking after them and is not fair on us ,we are concerned about them
. they are the friendliest , cutest moggs you ever seen .unlike my little brat , spoiled rotten

Oh how crumby that all is. I would do exactly the same as you in your situation. I don't know how close you are to your neighbor but maybe you could have a friendly word? Some people really don't mean to be cruel and neglect their animals but they do without realizing.

Poor little things
What is the point in having them if you are out all day and half the night as well!
You could say to your neighbour that you found them crying outside and that they were very cold and hungry and that this is happening every day and is there any way you could help, like letting them in their house if she's going to be home late.

Re: next door kittens left outside

This is the reason why i got two older cats that could be left during the day whilst we were at work and not two kittens/young cats that would need lots of love and attention (not that our two don't get that when we are at home).

I agree with Jill's suggestion - if you are happy to talk to her. Or (if you are really concerned) report her to the RSPCA.

You could do so anonymously and your neighboure'd never know.
Or.....
You could speak to your neighbour and ask her whether you could take care of the kittens while she is at work. Then devide the house into two- one for your cat and one for the kittens.Don't make your cat jealous by playing and cuddling the kittens when she's around. And if dhe considers the furniture to be hers, don't alllow the kittens on it. With time, she's hopefully learn to like them or at least ignore them.

Re: next door kittens left outside

she will know that's us reporting her .as for separate rooms for my cat and the little ones , is not really feasible .
but my husband will have a word with her just to say that they're crying at the door and they are hungry and cold . see what she says
Is such a shame , the little ones are brothers and they don't even seem to know their names . if she doesn't take them in , they will not bond with her and that's why they come to us for lovies

Re: next door kittens left outside

Personally, I don't really think it's fair to feed other people's cats, even if you are trying to help - which clearly you are. You see, it could be a vicious circle - she doesn't feed them enough because when she gets home they aren't hungry, they aren't hungry because you've fed them, you've fed them because she's not feeding them.. you see my point.
If she's new to having cats, it will take the young ones to be begging for food for her to realise that perhaps just one meal a day isn't enough. Otherwise she'll never learn.
I agree with what others have said - perhaps you could politely let her know that the kittens are coming to you for food, ask her if she feeds them in the morning. Or perhaps you could say something like "when my kitten was that age, they just loved... (food name here) would you like to try it with yours?" - then offer her some. If you start the conversation in a way that's not judging her, she might even ask you for advice - and then you can speak freely about the food and the shed!

Re: next door kittens left outside

I know that maybe we shouldn't feed them but that's kind of difficult when you see two little faces at your back door . But this is nothing , before she put a cat flap in the shed's door she used to leave them out all day in pouring rain , I'm not joking .they were taking shelter in some bushes in her garden .and they were just babies like 3 months old , they still are little . She had cats before , at least that's what she told me .she is coming from the countryside and has that country folk misconception that cats are just for vermin control and should be left to their own devices . but these 2 are too little , have no mom to teach them to hunt for mice and besides ,we live in a residential area not on a farm ...
this weekend she kept them in , she's got guests staying so she probably is showing them off . tomorrow will be dumped in the garden again ...
I'll have to call rspc because this is getting too stressful .

Re: next door kittens left outside

I would call them ASAP, it may just scare her into doing the right thing, it's possible she doesn't even know she's doing something wrong and they will be able to set her straight.

Re: next door kittens left outside

I agree with Lionclub here regarding the feeding regime and yes it can get into a vicious circle.

Why don't you try and have a word with here regarding their welfare and say to her in a diplomatic way about your concerns regarding their shelter and their feeding. If things do not improve then most definatly speak to the RSPCA.

By the way, us "country folk" do not think of our cats as just vermin control and they are most definatly not just left to their own devices. Why, just because we live out in the sticks would we treat our cats any different to "townies".

My cats are loved and cared for very very well.
