One kitten or two...

We are thinking about getting a kitten and I wanted to get some options about whether it is a good idea to get a pair from the same litter or just have the one? Most people I know who have cats only seem to have one. I've always had dogs so not as clued up on cats yet but do they prefer to have company of another cat? Espically if we are at work during the day...

Some websites that I have been on suggest getting two if you are not at home for most of the day.

Would love to hear what you all think!

Thanks!

Re: One kitten or two...

2 of my cats are brothers and they get along fabulously they sleep curled up together, they are great as they have that bond from being together from day one. personally i think its a good idea but best to get them spayed or neutered as soon as they can be, coz if u get a boy and a girl u dont want them mating with eachother and if u get 2 boys you dont want them spraying in the house, im not sure on how 2 females would be but they may fight with eachother when they come into heat.

Having 2 kittens isnt the same as having 2 puppies as you have to train puppies etc, kittens /cats can look after themselves, they also keep each other company and are great fun to watch playing, as said above think carefully of which sex you want, one of each and they must be spayed/neutered good luck in picking them and have fun

Yes def get two if you are out at work all day. My two are fantastic company for each other, and if you get from the same litter or even kittens from different litters they will bond from the beginning and have great fun together. Two gets my vote every time

Re: One kitten or two...

I'd recommend 2 as well, I wasn't sure what to do at the start and i think things were much easier because I got 2 from the same litter, meant they settled into my house very quickly as it wasn't as scary leaving mum and dad when they were together. They definitely keep each other fit with chasing games and the day's i'm out at work they keep each other company. I would say its easier to have the 2 than just one :-)

Yep!! 2 gets my vote!
You will not regret it. Having 2 kittens together is great. You will have so much fun watching them. They will always have company when you go out and most cats will become life long pals together.
I have 3 cats and the 2 fifteen year olds are always together. They sleep together and wash each other.
They came from different litters and i got them a month apart.
Have fun in choosing them!!
Let us all know what you get and don't forget the pics!

Re: One kitten or two...

Two is good.

If you get two boys, you'll be fairly lucky if they get along together for their whole lives. Two females are more likely to get along, but one of each is most likely.

Also, bear in mind that you won't know the true nature of their long-term relationship until they are three to four years old.

I'd also recommend reading a book or two by Vicky Halls (Cat Confidential or Cat Detective). Quite often, it can appear that cats are getting along fine, when in fact there is a major power struggle going on between them. Because we don't speak Cat, we don't notice it. Vicky explains the signs to look out for, and how to smooth the waves. Quite a lot of soiling issues are caused by inter-cat stresses that go undetected by the owners.

I'll be getting two kittens in a few months, but I'm glad I've read Vicky's books first.

Re: One kitten or two...

TWO is my vote, my two boys are from differant litters, a Maine Coon and a Selkirk Rex Variant which means that Ollie is TWICE the size of Stan two but they really love each other! It's great wtaching them and it was the best thing I ever did getting a second one. There is only 4 days between them in age but like I say Ollie is twice the size but Stan gives as good as he gets!
Can't imagine them not loving each other in years to come.
