Giving cats human names - silly or not?

My kitten's name is Megan. I chose the name because it is sweet, but not too cutesy like "Fluffy". My adopted cat is called Sully, which can also be considered a human name. An acquaintence of mine reckons giving cats human names is stupid. I think giving cats/pets human names is fine. I have no problem with pet names ("Sooty" and "Patch", for example) either.

What do you think of giving human names to cats? Have you given your cats human names? Have you not? Why/why not?

Re: Giving cats human names - silly or not?

my mums cat is called HAL but she is weird they spent alot of time thinking of a name for him but i must admit i prefer a normal name to a cute one yeah thats ok when they are a kitten but who wants to be going Mr twinkles come get your dinner that is only my opinion i have a puppy and while we were trying to think of a name we agreed a normal name for him was better than something that everyone uses like rover or cheeko

Re: Giving cats human names - silly or not?

Well our cat is called Cinderella mainly because she's my daughters and she chose it but she does suit it now, well Cinderella had 4 kittens on Halloween and we've called them Crookshanks, Albus, Severus and Minerva. We always said if she had a Ginger kitten we'd call it Crookshanks after Hermione's cat in Harry Potter and with them being Halloween kittens it made sense to carry on the Harry Potter theme. I think as long as you don't mind being called from the Vets waiting room by the cats name then its fine. Although i did blush the first time the Vet shouted Cinderella

I also think it's up to the owner, and wouldn't call any names silly.
Our kittens are Rocky and Sapphire but we thought of lots of different names.
We also liked Bella, Leah, Phoenix, Chili and Pepper - which is a mixture.

Re: Giving cats human names - silly or not?

I have pretty much gone with what suits the animal rather than a 'people' or 'pet' name.

The spaniel is Max... an 'either or' type name, the lab came with the name Poppy and she was 5.

Mabel is an old fashioned people name, not sure how Mabel ended up with it, mostly cos it rhymed with 'table' I think, she was sat on one at the time.

Indy is after Indiana Jones, because he's handsome and adventurous and gets into weird situations.

Misha is the Russian pet form of Michael and he is named after a lynx companion I have in an online game *blush*

Re: Giving cats human names - silly or not?

A few of mine have 'people' names:

Sam, Ben, Joe, George, Harry, Lucy and there was my Suzie, RIP

but I also have Zeta, Gwyngala, Honey and BB (used to be Baby!) - plus I had my beloved Gypsy, RIP.

I think whatever the name, as long as it suits the cat, anything goes!!

Re: Giving cats human names - silly or not?

It's not stuipid I have a cat called Tabitha and Lucius (there could be people out there with that name lol). I also have a cat called Cotton. All my cats names were chosen because I liked them.

My sister also has a cat called Ronald which I think is really cute and my mum has cats called Ruby and Molly
