Re: Giving cats human names - silly or not?

I'm going to confess to being a name snob when it comes to cats. I feel annoyed when I hear of a cat named Fluffy. (No offense to any meowmys of a Fluffy out there ment, I'm sure your Fluffy is a darling)! But this is an evolutionary masterpiece we are talking about. An animal with such enigma, such style, such mystery such a superior and beautiful and elegant creature. A majestic feline does not deserve to be given such a simple minded human name as Fluffy !! *tut tut tut* (even if they happen to be Fluffy ).

I think a cat deserves a name that is unique and peculiar (thinkk of that song in the opnening of the musical cats).

Nefertiti and Tiramisu. Agamemnon. Amadeus. Chantilly. Galileo. Zanzibar. Confuscious. Rumpleteazer and Mungo-Jerry. Belvadere and Desire. Pearliekins and Lady Godiva. Montezuma and Rogan-Josh. Paganini and Renoir. Jimmy Choo and Concerto.

Arh bless me I'm just an eccentric

I tend to choose a name based on personality! Human/non-human... doesn't matter which!

Re: Giving cats human names - silly or not?

My oldest girl is called Tiffany, it just came to me when I saw her, we had another girl called Peppina, my OH is Italian and had told me of the name Peno (loved the name) which is a boys name and short for Guiseppe but Pena, short form of Peppina is the feminine version.

Unfortunately we lost Pena in July to a car but have since acquired 2 more girls, the middle one is called Bellinda, OH wanted Linda but I compromised, she gets Bell, Bella, Bellinda and Linda but doesn't answer to any of them. (Tiff comes to Tiffany).

Our youngest is called Jessica, thanks to the people on here, I posted a pic and a poll when we got her and it was by far the winner.

So all human names here, my friends find it funny when I talk about the cats they all imagine little old women for some reason, very funny if I refer to Bellinda licking her bits or something lol

Re: Giving cats human names - silly or not?

My cats are called Audrey and Margot. If you met Audrey you'd know why, she just looks like an Audrey! My dog's also called Victor.

SAying that, Margot is most universally referred to as Moomin, Victor is quite often called Features (cos we called him Dog Features for a while) and Little V. Audrey is mostly called The Bean, but she's answers to Audrey. The other 2 cats I had were called Phillip and Richard.

In fact, my parents cats are called Eddie, Patsy and Stransky and my in-laws cats are called Nellie and Maisie, so we don't have cutesy 'pet' names for any of them really (Stransky was named after Joel Stransky, a rugby player). My childhood dog was called Flo (Florence).

We usually joke that our first born child will be called Tiddles or Fluffy!

Re: Giving cats human names - silly or not?

Mine are called Annie and Oliver as they were both orphans Oliver is my daughters cat as she loved the film Oliver Twist and Annie is my sons cat he loved the film Annie.
When we got Annie 13 years ago, she was just going down for her kitty op and we had a call from the vet that did we know Annie was a boy!, we never changed the name and always thought of her as a girl even to this day.

Re: Giving cats human names - silly or not?

When we got Dorrie, we wanted something that was unique, suited her and would be appropriate for her as she grew older.
We decided on Dory which is the name of the blue fish in Finding Nemo and changed the spelling.

Re: Giving cats human names - silly or not?

My little one is called Seren because when I was getting her I had a friend who suggested Buffy (she is a Joss Whedon fan), and I then thought of other Joss Whedon series, like Firefly. From there I got the spaceship Serenity and shortened it to Seren mistakingly thinking she would be a serene little girl.

Now although she looks up when Seren is called, she only actually answers to the name "Food"

Re: Giving cats human names - silly or not?

I dont think its silly at all.. Its better than naming the cat a stupid name for example, Mrs princess.. or mini or patch or socks.
You wouldnt want to stand at your door shouting " SOCKS or MR TWINKLES "
your neighbours will think your mad.
Personally i dont care what people name there cats. but id rather name them human names because theyre part of your family and not silly.

Mum to Mia, Toby, Harvey and Noah!

Re: Giving cats human names - silly or not?

Well our first cat Jessie was named after postman pats cat Jess, cos i was 7 or 8 when we got her and cos she's black and white, she reminded me of postman pats cat, so we were gonna call her jess, but decided on jessie, tho she replied to jess.....we also call her queen bitch and cracken haha

We had a ginger cat next which we called Toffee, cos he was ginger, like toffee coloured and such a sweet, lovable cat! But he got knocked down dec 97 at about 2 years old

Then we had a persian who we lost 18months ago, she was already named when we got her, she was called smokey

Then we got our next black and white cat, a male....in the rehoming center he was called Spratt, after Jack Spratt [sure you know the rhyme] but we decided shouting 'Spratt' was stupid, so called him Jack, suits him to a tee, he's jack spratt when naughty tho haha

Now are newest additions, named after british formula one racing drivers Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton....they were named snuggles and smudge in the rehoming center, there was no way we'd call them that and cos the previous day jenson won the world championship it fitted and since lewis is the black and white cat, he got the name lewis as lewis hamilton is coloured

Also in the past we had a budgie called Piper [i dunno haha] gerbils which me and my sister gave a new name too every week, most memorable being Jason and Kylie haha and i got my sisters goldifsh Wotsit, named that cos when she won it at a fair like 3-4 years ago, people kept asking her 'whats its name?' which sounded like wotsit, so taadaa, also helps he's orange like a wotsit haha i dont have names for the minnoes in the tank as i cant tell the difference between them haha

I think, if your ok with standing at your door and calling fluffy, snuggles or any other cutsey baby silly names, then name them that, byt if you wouldnt be caught dead calling those names out, then name it something else
