house / apartment cats?

hi guys in a newbie here been living out of mum and dads now for near on 3 years and every time i go home i see my mums 2 gorgeous cats 2 girls crincles is a scottinsh fold and strwberry a british short hair ,i miss them so much and was considering buying a kitten but wated to do my homework first
basickly i live in an appartment with my girlfriend , and we live on the top floor which is 3 stories up so if a had a kitten letting her out is not an option

my question is is there a breed of cat that aint going to be tempted to go out? , by the way i love strawberry more than crincles as she seems to love me back more and crincles keep her distance lol .

Re: house / apartment cats?

Some cats are quite happy to never go outside. Generally if they haven't been out they don't miss it- but some are total escape artists.
If you get your cat as a kitten and have it neutered on time you shouldn't really have a problem.

Re: house / apartment cats?

Hello Chris and welcome to the forum.
Have you thought about maybe a slightly older cat that has been brought up as an indoor cat only ?.I ask this as our cat shows no interest in going outside at all(she is a BSH),in fact she is to scared due to her past.
If you ask at local adoption centres I'm sure they will be able to point you in the right direction.

Cats live long healthy happy lives indoors. Just make sure your kitty gets plenty of attention and exercise.

Rather than buy, consider adopting from a shelter. You can always get TWO, especially two that would otherwise be separated (it is devastating for cats who have been together their whole lives to be separated)

Re: house / apartment cats?

I have two standard domestic shorthair boys of no breed that are perfectly happy indoors... it is more their upbringing than their breed I think... though some cats no matter how they are raised or no matter what the breed will want out.

Would you consider a disabled cat? rescues often have a hard time homing a cat that has a disability that requires an indoor only home?

Other than that, go for what you really like... just make sure they have plenty of toys, places to hide and climb and lots and lots of stimulation.

You can also harness train and take kitty for walks to get fresh air and natural light it you want to!

Re: house / apartment cats?

Some cats can be very happy indoors. You could get 2 kittens and at least when you weren't home they would have company and it would help stop boredom!

Other things to consider is:

Window sills free so they can watch the world go by.
Cat scratchers and climbers
2 litter trays in different areas
Food and water in a few areas (this gives them a chance ''to seek out food'' and encourages more drinking)
Plenty toys that are rotated regulary to keep interest
Puzzle balls and feeders
Places and items for them to sleep in and on
Also you will have to make plenty of time for playing with them Things like rod toys, cat lasers, and lots of cuddles!

These are some things of the top of my head when i kept my 4 cats in. Good luck in your quest for cats! Please keep us updated!

Re: house / apartment cats?

My two were house cats for 4 years as my ex had a 'thing' about letting them out. They now happily come and go but up until then they were very happy being indoor cats and never once tried to escape. Actually took a bit persuading them to become outdoor cats to begin with (though you wouldn't know it now! )

I agree two is best as then they have company and also make sure you get a good cat scratcher, more than one and in different parts of the house if you have the room.

As someone else has said, if they have never been out they don't miss it. My two never even tried to nosy round the door, they would run away if you opened it.
