Cat insurance, just how does it work

Hi i've been reading a lot over the last few day about different cat insurers and prices bit my Question is Just how does it work? I have been very lucky with Cinderella she's only been to the vets for her vaccination ( i say touching every bit of wood i can find), but reading some threads on the forum i see some people seem to be at the vets a lot. So would insurance pay every visit or depending on the problem or is. I'm very confused

Re: Cat insurance, just how does it work

You tend to get what you pay for
Some companies offer differing levels of cover.
Most pay a pre agreed sum for a specific condition.
If you opt for lifetime cover then they pay that amount , for that condition, every year that you pay your premiums.
eg if your cat has an accident- hopefully a one off occurence- then they will pay up to the agreed amount for treatment. If you cat developes a condition eg diabetes then they will pay up to that amount every year that you are insured with them.
If you opt for the cheaper insurance option then you will find that you are only insured for that condition for a year and then they won't pay out anymore.
It really pays to read all the small print and assess what you think you might need.

Yes, do your research. find a comparison chart of all the insurances available. I have a link to a comparison list but it's for insurances in the USA.

Many insurances have pre exisiting clauses, and they will nit pick to the death. For instance if your cat was brought in for a cough once, they will see that and refuse you.

I know one who paid premiums on their kitty for years and years. Their cat got cancer, and for the first three months the bills were covered. When it was time for the policy to roll over, they were denied coverage because the cancer was now considered a "pre exisiting". So all those years of premiums went to nothing.

I know more and more people are buying these insurances. Just keep in mind that insurance companies are not out to save anyone money, they are out to MAKE money.

I prefer to keep my money. One option is to just save the money you would spend on monthly premiums, in a special account. Then if you get an unexpected vet bill, the money is there.

If possible, also, open a credit card account, but do not use it for anything but vet bill emergencies.

I would suggest asking your vet. My vet was very helpful and gave me advice on ones not to go with, ones that they had dealt with and had problems with. if in doubt ask your vet, they are there to help and happy to do so.

Re: Cat insurance, just how does it work

I called the vets and the lady on reception said that she wasn't allowed to recommend anybody but if i popped down they had some laeflets on display and she would make me up a pack of suitable companys (reading between the line pop down and i'll unofficialy nudge you in the right direction) she did also say read the small print and always go for life cover which are 2 things i have already learnt from the forum. So thankyou
