Covered Litter trays...advice

I'm thinking of attempting a move over to a covered litter tray to contain the mess of kicked out litter and the smells (how can such tiny animals make such a smell?!?!).....just looking for any tips on how to make it as easy as possible for the kittens??

I was thinking of having it placed beside the existing one to start with but showing them it's there, not sure if it's possible to leave the door off it to start with, i'm picking it up tomorrow....will this help??

Thanks

Em x

With mine i put the bottom half of the tray down - like a normal open tray

then after a few days i put the lid on

a few days after that i put the door/flap on

worked fine for me!

I find a covered litter box hold odors in.

If you keep the litter boxes clean you should not have odor problems. Ideally you should have one box per cat, plus one.

I use the large clear rubbermaid(tm) tubs for litter boxes.

Re: Covered Litter trays...advice

I have the one from pets at home, and I did exactly what new2cats did, I put the bottom half down first (with a bit of old litter in), then I put the lid on a few days later shes just got used to that so the next step for me is to put the door on.
They really are great, and because mabel is still a kitten she has to jump out and she manages to kick the litter off as she jumps, so no litter outside the box.

Re: Covered Litter trays...advice

Thanks all, I do clean the tray just now as soon as i notice anything, so doing it a couple of times a day, Trouble covers hers though Mischief doesn't so if i've been out the house for a bit and come back the lounge stinks from one tiny poo

I'll try the tips of using just the base to start then the cover and finally the door, they have been great since the minute i brought them home never doing anything anywhere apart from the tray, so sure they will take to it well

They are little dears. Yep, poop stinks, it's a fact! The one not burying is showing his/her dominance over the other.

Yep thats what I did. My cats are enthusiastic diggers so the covered trays made a huge difference for me. I personally don't find they contain more odour.

Re: Covered Litter trays...advice

We started using a covered litter box when we found our little one wasn't sitting down to pee, and was pee-ing all over the wall behind him!
He got used to it straight away, door on and everything. But yes, you should be able to take the door off to start with.
The only downside was that because the smells were contained within, cleaning it was pretty horrible. Also, for some reason, the litter didn't clump as well as it did in a non-covered box. We assume it has something to do with the restricted air flow. Instead it turned to a sort of mushy clay, which made it much harder to clean than before.
Overall tho, still suited our needs better than the other boxes as we'd much rather scrape clay off the box than wash pee off the wall!
