Cats and Bleach

I clean my cats tray out with bleach every week or so. When I do the smell of it on me or my hands drives them nuts! Has anyone else noticed this?

I have a friend whose cat rolls around on the kitchen floor when they bleach it. I guess it doesnt do them any harm (when heavily diluted of course)

Re: Cats and Bleach

Have to say we don't use bleach so don't experience this - we use a special cat litter tray spray - can't remember what it's called though, but the cats don't seem to mind it.

Re: Cats and Bleach

I try not to use bleach if I can help it. I use washing up liquid or Stardrops for Dorries tray and Flash one for all everywhere else in the house and keep her away until it is dry.

Re: Cats and Bleach

I have been told before that bleach has a similar enzyme in it to cat urine which will make them think another cat is around. This is why it's recommended not to clean up cat wee with bleach as it usually just makes the cat wee more to scent mark. Washing up liquid should be ok for washing their trays out.

Re: Cats and Bleach

Referring to above post, yes it does have certain chemical compounds that are also present in cat wee.

Not a problem for washing out your litter trays - at all - in fact it helps to reinforce the idea that the tray is the place to go.

Obviously, cleaning a place where an accident has happened has to be done differently - solution of biological washing powder or liquid is advised here plus maybe a followup of white vinegar.

Be very very careful of what you use around cats - many common disinfectants etc are poisonous (and won't stop the cats peeing there again).

Bleach for trays - yes!

Any disinfectant that turns white in water is to be avoided as it's toxic to cats.
