Clumping Vs Non-clumping...?

It might sound like a dumb question but Im trying to get everything ready before I get another cat and Im a bit rusty in the knowledge department..

I understand the meaning of 'clumping' and 'Non clumping' but which is generally thought of as the better cat litter.

I had a covered litter tray before with a flap for the cat to go in and out and I intend to get that again but I honestly cant remember which litter I got.

Aslo, I have seen those space age type litter boxes that apparantly clean themselves. Are there any reviews on those on this forum or is a simplier litter box the best?

TIA

Wow - what a lot of cat litter threads all of a sudden!

I use chick crumbs which is clumping - so much nicer than non-clumping.

I hate clumping. One wee from a Maine Coon & I have half the litter left.

I prefer clumping. So much easier to clean up and I find it smells less.

I don't like clumping when Cinderella has a wee it looks like a massive poo, i find it much easier to scoop out and keep a clean litter tray aswell with non-clumping

Deffo clumping every time! Would never go back to non clumping now. Cats Best is a brilliant clumping litter. Its wood based and it clumps into easily scoopable clumps leaving the rest of the litter clean and dry. I don't use the convential plastic scoops with the holes in, I use a large metal serving spoon as I think its easier to keep clean than the plastic scoops. It is supposed to be flushable but I always bag and bin it. Its only downside is it does track a lot the Petfood Warehouse - Cat's Best ÖkoPlus Clumping Litter - For Kittens & Cats - Make unpleasant indoor odours a thing of the past! - Pet Products Delivered to Your Door

Re: Clumping Vs Non-clumping...?

I prefer clumping as it is easier to remove the wees, but switched from Oko Cat's best to Catsan because Oko cat's best gets everywhere. Can any one recommend a litter that clumps but doesn't track?

Do chick crumbs track?

Re: Clumping Vs Non-clumping...?

I've been using clumping - cats best oko plus for the past few days which prefer to the catsan I was previously using. With cats best it's easy to remove the poo and clumps of wee which I just flush down the toilet. It's excellent for odour control. It's economical as I wont need to do a whole tray cleanout as often so the bag will last longer.

Re: Clumping Vs Non-clumping...?

I must have tried every cat litter out there when my Merlin became an elderly house-bound cat. Personally, I prefer the clumping. The stuff that turns to sawdust created so much dust and affected us in terms of allergies. The crystal type smelt absolutely horrible, and we often found a puddle of wee at the bottom of the tray. Our favourite is Extreme Classic There is hardly any smell, and very easy to pick out the used bits. Yes, you will go through a fair amount, but it clumps so well that you can pick out the used blocks and then top it up. With non clumping you tend to have to change the whole lot more often. Word of warning tho - with a covered tray you might find the clumping stuff doesn't work as well - when we used a covered tray for our new kitten, the used bits were more like clay than solid rocks. We think it must be something to do with air flow.
As for the auto-cleaning trays. I seriously considered one, but read too many bad reviews - cleaning rakes getting stuck etc. I honestly think they'd be more hassle than they are worth, and that is saying something coming from miss gadget over here.
