Cats going out in a Fox area?

I am hoping to get another cat soon but this time I would like to give a home to an unwanted cat from the Celia Hammond rescue centre or somewhere similar.
I have a garden which is enclosed and there are other cats in the area that I often see sleeping on my roof. However there are foxes in our area that are around both night and day.

How do cats and foxes get on? Would it be safe to allow a cat outside or should I keep a my new cat housebound?

Re: Cats going out in a Fox area?

Generally they avoid one another. Your cat should be ok its better they have a good outdoor life than be mollycodled. The only time there could be trouble is the fox breeding season when dog foxes can be aggressive. But a cat is well capable of looking after themselves and foxes are not one to give themselves a problem if they can aviod it

Re: Cats going out in a Fox area?

Hiya Sour Puss - welcome to PF.

We have foxes that visit our garden - we thought they'd gone away since we had the cats, but nope, OH spotted them in the spring with babies sunning themselves. My two seem to be ok with them - it's me that gets jumpy when i spot them in the garden when the cats are out there & thats only at the weekends so they must be ok in the week when i'm not there.

Re: Cats going out in a Fox area?

There are lots of foxes here and I have brought up 5 kittens without a problem, but I have always been very careful to keep younger inexperienced cats in at night especially when they first start to go out.
I have heard tales of foxes taking cats and I guess that they could quite easily but I don't really think that it is a common thing.

Re: Cats going out in a Fox area?

Hi,

A fox will not take on a fit and healthy adult cat. The cat would win hands down.
They will however chance their luck with a less able cat...injured, old and infirm etc

We have foxes here too and the cheeky beggers think nothing of strolling round the streets in broad daylight
Initially I was majorly panicked by them especially when my youngest, who was only around 9 months at the time, was involved in a stand off with one in next doors garden
Since then I have seen him stalking the fox, not the other way around, and neighbours have told me that they were having a game of chase in their garden one day (playful chase) but I'm not sure whether I believe that or not

Re: Cats going out in a Fox area?

Sur puss - last Friday's autumn watch was filmed in London (Hackney) and they had a section on urban Foxes. They flimed a cat coming face to face with a Fox the cat arched its back and the Fox quickly decided "discretion is the better part of valour". As per poster above a fit adult cat will have no problems.

Re: Cats going out in a Fox area?

A few years ago one very frosty night, i looked out of my window and there was a fox coming towards our house and my cat was sitting on the pavement watching the fox.
I called her and the little rascal looked at me and stuck her nose is the air and ignored me. I called her again and still had no response.
However the fox who was a a beauty just walked passed her and never looked at her and walked up towards me at the front door. He even put his head to one side like dogs do. I thought he might be hungry so i went inside and put some cat food in a bowl, by the time i got back he had gone. So i called "Foxy" and within a minute he was back tucking into his super. He even had seconds!
He seemed so tame i just sat at the side of him admiring how beautiful he was.
I could of perhaps even stroked him but i didn't.
Even though he was hungry he never bothered with my cat.
The next night i looked out for him but i never saw him again.
The only thing i can think of that his regular feeder had gone out for the night so he thought he would try somewhere else for super.
I just hope he's safe.
