Keeping Cat In Flat Question

Hi all,

Myself and my partner have just moved into a new 1st floor flat which is in a block with 3 other flats.

My question is that our cat we have had for 6 months which was from the Cats Protection Centre was use to a normal house and a small garden but now we have moved into a flat not sure what is the best way to keep a cat in a flat LOL.

She use to be a bit of an outdoors cat at night and in the evenings at the old house and spent her time inside in the day but now we are in a 1st floor and share the stairs with 3 other people inc a dog i wanted to know should i just try and keep her inside all the time or let her out as normal out the back door which go;s into a small garden with bushes and tree;s in. We have kept her inside for over 10 days when we moved and at present she has just gone out for the first time as she started to try and climb up the front door. Fingers cross the cat and dog do not meet on the stairs if someone else lets her in.

I think i just worry about her to much and i call her every so often out the window near the garden LOL

Any tips or advice will be great.

Chris

Re: Keeping Cat In Flat Question

If I was in your situation I would try and harness train her then you can take her outdoors for fresh air on a leash.

It's the safest option especially if your near any main roads etc.

Also just to point out that 95% of cats killed by car accidents are killed at night time, you should never let you cat stay outdoors overnight it's just too dangerous and isn't worth the risk!

Re: Keeping Cat In Flat Question

Hi There,

Many thanks for the reply.

Well we are i would say 100 meters from nearest main road and the back garden area;s back onto other peoples back gardens.

My girl friend suggest we just keep her inside as its a big flat and has a balconey so maybe we can let the cat out on that for the fresh air.

I understand about cars and cats alot. Our last cat was kocked over at our old house in broad daylight in the summer

Re: Keeping Cat In Flat Question

I live in a flat and all mine are indoor cats and your cat is only young so she will get used to staying indoors.

Is she spayed or are you going to spey her? as that will also help to keep her indoors as she will lose the urge of wanting to go out.

Hope this helps

Re: Keeping Cat In Flat Question

Hi

We used to live in a flat and kept ours inside all the time. But because we gave them free run of the flat, there were a few times they got out the front door, onto the stairs as they always were waiting at the front door for us. Now we live in a house with a garden but still choose to keep them in as we live on a busy road, but when we are out, we keep them in the dining room and kitchen which is plenty big for them, so no chance of them getting out the front door.
