Petition to Ban Sale of Kittens from PetShops

Hi there,

There are only a few days left to run on this very important petition. If you agree with the wording of the petition (copied below) please click on this link and sign the petition.

Petition to: ban the sale of kittens from pet shops. | Number10.gov.uk

Thankyou!

We believe the buying and selling of kittens from pet shops and other retail outlets, and the keeping of such animals on these premises for the purpose of sale:

- is detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the animals concerned

- actively encourages backstreet breeding of kittens for financial gain

- has the very serious effect of ensuring that the many thousands of cats and kittens already in rescues up and down the country have less chance of being rehomed.

Re: Petition to Ban Sale of Kittens from PetShops

While I totally agree with this petition I feel I have to share our experience.

We said that never under any circumstances would we get a cat from a pet shop. One day, whilst passing one, we popped inside to have a look at some of the things they had in there as we were wanting to buy a kitten. In the corner, in a smallish cage there was the cutest little kitten, on his own, lethargic & looking very sorry for himself. We had a decision to make, we could either take him home with us & give him all the love, care & attention he deserved or, go along with the fact that doing so would go against everything we'd said we wouldn't do.

So we took him home, unable to bear leaving him there on his own. And even though everytime someone asks us where we got our little man from, we cringe & feel slightly ashamed, we also feel happy that we rescued him from the misery. He was underweight when we got him & put on 100g in just 5 days with us, which is amazing.

So whilst no, i don't agree with buying from pet shops, sometimes i think that, for the kittens who are already in there, it's the best thing for them. After all, at least the animals at a rescue centre are well treated/ fed & cared for, i wish the same could be said for pet shops! If we were to get another animal though, I must say we'd be heading straight to the animal shelter!

Sorry for the essay....

A 'rescue' doesn't have to take happen in a rescue centre.

Don't feel bad about your decision.

I do totally agree with the petition, but if cats are there in pet shops, then the people likely to read this forum are probably the best type of customer the 'goods' could hope for!

Don't feel bad for rescuing that poor little mite from the pet shop. I would probably do exactly the same thing and this is precisely why kittens should not be sold in pet shops.
The pet shops play on the fact that the little one's in their *care* are usually below par healthwise and therefor likely to be snapped up by someone who cannot bear to see them in these conditions.
I rescued my last little one from a rescue but I use the term rescue very loosely. It was an independant rescue run from someone's house and the place was absolutely filthy. There were about a dozen kittens all lumped in together in one room with one litter tray. The place stank to high heaven. I hadn't gone prepared to bring a kitty home that day but I left with the only kitten she said could go on his own. No home check, nothing. I didn't even have a carrier to take him in and she was completely unconcerned by this.
It took over a week for the smell of urine to wear off him and I couldn't bath him because he'd been frontlined (he was crawling with fleas).
So....I do understand why you went against what you believe in to rescue that little one. You'd have to have a heart of stone not to.
