New kitten seems to have an infection

I just got two kittens on Sunday. While they are slowly but steady getting used to the nwe environment (and to me, though this is really happening slowly, especially for the smaller one who seems to be very shy).
When I visited the cats the eyes of one of the kittens looked normal, so there was suddenly some liquid in one of his eys. I asked if there was a problem, and the owner said no, there is no infection.

Now a few days later I see a bit thick liquid near the eye, and the the area between eyes and nose looks a bit strange, like an infection. Charlie has no pain, is not making any noise, though I wil get this checked out on Friday when I go to the Vet.
I am just wondering, is there any guideliens that the current owner must provide the correct information during the purchase (sorry for the hard word), as this is the case with other things like cars. If this is the case, can I make the previous owner liable for the vet costs if any further treatment is required?
My pet insurance starts today or tomorrow, but of course you have the 14 days where you can make no claim,k and just worried that it could involve some high costs to get this fixed (if there is a problem)?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Oh, and is it normal that two kittens from the same mum and same age are quite different size wise? Bobby is quite small, and Charlie is the bigger and far more active one.

Re: New kitten seems to have an infection

some kittens develop at different rates to their siblings - so yes that is normal.

Is the 'liquid', thick and green? If so it is an infection, if it is clearish, and dries to a black ish crustyiness then this is due to the face shape of your kitten and isn't an infection.

I've forgotten - but are they moggies? If so then you will probably have no luck trying to get any recompence from the breeder, as you won't have signed a contract. You could potentially take it through the small claims court but you would have to prove that the breeder knew there was an infection (if there is one) and that he/she deliberately mis-led you, and the hassle will probably be worth less than the cost of a vets consultation and a few eye drops.

Quite often a move brings out any underlying viruses that have been laying dorment due to the stresses involved - it doesn't mean that the breeder was remiss.

Yes, I agree with previous post, I was also going to say that if it is just a straightforward eye infection, the vet bill shouldn't be huge, hopefully just a couple of consultation fees and some eyedrops.

Re: New kitten seems to have an infection

Thanks.

They are both Moggies. It is thick, and it dried near the ey in two areas. He tries to clean it with his paws, and otherwise not bothered. It is probably just meas a new owner to get worried about everything.

So I just have to wait till Friday to see what the vet is saying

It's very common even in the best-raised and reared kitten households.... It's something that every conscientious breeder dreads, no matter how well they have loved & cared for their babies!

I do hope yours will be back to normal soon

Re: New kitten seems to have an infection

if he is having trouble clearing it away use some cold tea and a cotton pad to wipe it away gently. the kitten will not like this at all but it does help

Re: New kitten seems to have an infection

I was at the Vet with the both of them, and it seems they have a "light" cat flu, otherwise they are fine. Therefore I have to give them tabletts and eyedrops. No problem with the tabletts, as I mix it with the food and feed them then separately.
However, the eye drops are a different story. With Charlie it is not too difficult, as I can pick him up and wtith a bit resistance put the drops into his eyes.
With Bobby on the other hand it is impossible. He is shy anyway, and not getting too close to me. I grapped him twice, but he is whining, and scratching around so I cannot keep him, as I feel guilty if he is in pain. As a result he didn't get any eye drops. To mak things worse he moves even further away now when I am nearby.
I feel so frustrated that I cannot give him the medication, and at the same time both seems to get more distant again....
Any advise?

wrap him in a towel - then he can't move, scratch you or escape. Hope they are both better soon - remember he needs this at the moment MORE than he needs you to be his friend - that can come later.

My best advice is approach from behind as cat's instinct is to jump backwards and your body will form an obstacle to prevent this happening (and wrap cat tightly in a towel as suggested elsewhere if that doesn't work).

Re: New kitten seems to have an infection

Wrap Bobby in a towel for the eye drops. It was smart of you to get them to the vet right away. URIs in kittens can make them go downhill fast, so you did the right thing.

Yes there may be some reversal of trust for a little while with them, but it is very important that they get the complete treatment. You can work on trust issues again when they are done with the medicine.

In the meantime, you can help ward off too much shying away by giving them lots of attention, play time and hands on cuddling when you are not medicating them. Reach for them and hold them as often as you can between eye drop sessions, so they will not think the only time you reach for them something icky will happy.

In addition, give a special treat like a little yogurt or other probiotic after doing the eye drops, so eye drops are associated with something pleasant. They need the probiotic while they are on the antibiotic anyway.
