Which insurance company do you use? My Xito will come with 6 weeks free insurance too, but yesterday i was getting quotes for when this runs out. Petplan costs around £10 for the cheapest option but as far as i understand it doesn't cover for life of a condition, the one that does costs around £22 per month. It seems quite expensive specially after reading the other posts here. I want him to be fully covered, hopefuly i'll never need it but just in case. It would be horrible if he ever got ill and i couldn't afford expensive vet bills

Hi Trish

My 2 moggies have Gold Cover with Healthy Pets which is their top cover and it cost £6 a month for both. This means the cats are covered for life and ongoing conditions but it appears there is a cap which is £5000 on vets fees for the Gold cover.

My 3 pedigrees will be covered with Pet Plan and there are 3 types of insurance as I have had a quote recently:

Budget - £7 a month approx each
Covered For Life - £11 a month approx each (vets fees capped)
Covered For Life Unlimited - £16 a month approx each (no fee caps)

Be careful with some companies that you get quotes from as some of them do not cover for the entire life of the cat if their illnesses are terminal and need medication and vets time for the rest of their lives. Pet Plan's Covered For Life Unlimited does cover for all this, but you can check the comparisons on their website.

You do get discount for multi pets too which is worth considering!

My conclusion would be that I would use Pet Plan based on the information. I may even switch my moggies over to Pet Plan.

But once my pedigrees become breeding queens, then they wont be insured as very few companies insure for pregnancy related illnesses.

Hope that helps

Re: Pet insurance

I don't have insurance for the cats, (same reason as Saynamore) I have PetPlan for the dog, he's nearly 8 and been with them from the start. The cats, I have a cat account for and put money in that. All my kittens do go with 6 weeks PetPlan insurance though.
Trish I would shop around for insurance, whats best for you, there are so many now. I will say that PetPlan have always been good with any claims i've made for our dog.

Re: Pet insurance

'Which?' the consumer magazine has done a report on pet insurance. It says the most basic insurance is a waste of time and money. For a cat £4k is more than enough for the lifetime of the pet for vet fees.

Not sure I can give you a link because it is members only.

Will look at it again and post summary of what it says.

I have been thinking of insurance and my 2 MCs but as they will probably be indoor cats I think I will put £20.00 each into an account for vet fees. MCs are supposed to be healthy (ummm reading the breeder websites there can be problems but the problems seem to manifest early....)

Re: Pet insurance

I can't really help sorry Trish as none of ours are insured. When we had just 2cats, they were both insured with Pet Plan, (going back about 6 years) and then it cost us £13 per month per cat. Never made a claim in that time. We currently pay about £32 per month for our Rottie, again with Petplan and fortunately we haven't need it yet.

In actual fact, this answer doesn't help you at all does it lol.

The majority of our kitten families use Petplan, it isn't cheap, however, the ones who have had to put in claims have had their money back within a week. It is always worth shopping around and make sure you read the small print to ensure that cover is for life as opposed to just for a set amount of time and make sure there are no monetary limits on an illness. For example, some companies will cover an illness for life, others will only cover it up until £5000 or so. So if your cat were to get diabetes at 3 years of age, then you would need lifetime cover for that illness. Does that make sense?
