New Home New Kitten. Need Advice.

My Wife and I are soon to move to our new house with a Lovely big Garden. We recently lost our young cat and miss him terrible. We want to have another Kitten and have The chance of one soon from the same family of our late Ollie. I know we wont replace him as all cats are different, Personality ECT. Our only worry is that our soon to be new Home is about 75 yards from a busy main Road. Wee ollie got run over and the thought of the same happening again worries me big time. Some Members of our family say don't get a cat get a dog instead. Whats your thoughts, Thanks for all replies.

What about getting an elderly cat from a rescue place that doesn't wander far? I would not get a young cat if I was worried about living too near the road.

You could cat proof the garden?

If your worried you can keep him indoors. I have three cat plus one, all are indoors and happy. They run rampet, play fight, get into things, climb up screens!!

But I know my babies are safe

Thought about that. The vet says if a cat wants out you just got to let it go.
Same with Ollie he just wanted out out all the time, but he would always come home. until.

Re: New Home New Kitten. Need Advice.

Hiya, me and my girlf were in the exact same boat, our kitten got ran over and we were devastated, and were contemplating get another because we didnt want to ever have to go through the same again. I always said you cant keep a cat indoors, because i thought it was cruel, but now ive kind of changed my mind to the fact i think it depends on where you live, for roads etc. And after visitng the cat rescue centre, and i saw literally hundreds of cats inside cages the size of a shed, i realised that they can have a happy life indoors if you provide them enough fun and games. My opinion would be to cat proof your garden, it wouldnt take much and if you spend some time on it it doesnt have to look a mess either. Either that or keep the new kitten indoors and give them lots of toys, a cat condo or something like that. I think the garden is the best option though, we try to give pets a close to natural life as possible but whilst staying safe dont we i think thats what cat proofing your garden is.

Hope all goes well x

Re: New Home New Kitten. Need Advice.

Oh sorry i forgot to say, that our one cat, toto who died, was desprate to go out, always crying to get out and it was cruel to leave him in, so we had to let him. He was a cat on his own, now we've got 2 kittens. There too young really but its only my opinion, but 2 cats seem to me to be more content with staying indoors, i think it might be to do with always having company and someone to play with. Only in general of course i dont believe it to be the same for every single cat.

Oh no, give me a sedate older cat any time. They're lovely when they're old, affectionate, homeloving, hunt less, don't shred your curtains, etc etc.
