introducing a cat to a dog who chases cats?

Hi guys!

Hopefully when I am in second year uni, I will be living in accomodation where I will be renting off my parents. The dream is to adopt a cat then to live with me!
However, I will travelling from home to uni every now and again, and the kitty would be coming with me. The only problem is that my parents own a rescue SBT who is known to chase cats. He did escape once, and was absolutley scatched to death by my neighbours very eldery cat, but the cat was completley unharmed.
Since they have had him (4 years) his behaivour towards cats on the road has improved hugely, and sometimes he even ignores them How successful is it to introduce a cat to a dog like this?

thanks alot, Janak

well he may be ok with a kitten but if he really dislikes cats and was hurt by a cat then is it really fare on him to bring in a kitten thats tricky as ive know dogs to dislike kittens that much they wont even let them in the room and i always say if your going to have dogs and cats together then get the cat first and a puppy secand as then they know no diffents good luck with that

I can't imagine this introduction will ever go well - unless . . . the dog has been retrained and no longer chases cats. If he is a cat chaser now I imagine he always will be. I would pity the poor cat forced to deal with him and if a kitten it could severly traumatise it.

Re: introducing a cat to a dog who chases cats?

I would really NOT recomend this at all.

A dog that chases cats usually chases them for a reason, what exactly do you think will happen to the kitten if the dog manages to catch it?

How do you think the kitten will feel constantly being chased??

The dog can be re-trained to not chase but for some breeds it is in the gene's and can be very difficult.

Some breeds such a JRT can NEVER be trusted alone with cats as the urge to chase is too tempting.

I suggest that if you get a cat you are best finding a pet sitter for when you are home with the dog or wait until you have your own place.

It's just not worth the risk in my opinion.

Re: introducing a cat to a dog who chases cats?

thank you very much guys for the help. I will definatley have to rethink this then...

Becuase I have applied for an animal based course, I will be based in the agriculture campuses. One uni I have applied for allows free pet boarding on condition they are used in small classes where they teach animal handling. I guess I will have to have ONE LAID BACK cat for this...

If this is not an option, I am going to have to wait until I am moved out I guess my cat dreams are not going to work out.

looking on the net, there are help guides for this, but with a dog thats breed has a high prey drive, it will be pretty difficult, if not impossible some say....
