Is Phoebe Fat?!

Hi

Starting to think that our kitten Phoebe, who is a 6 month old British Shorthair, may be getting fat! But I read lots of times that kittens don't get fat as they are always growing, and they should always have food available if they get hungry. She lives with her brother Frank, from the same litter, and between them they share 5 pouches of Hi-Life kitten food and sometimes Felix As Good As It Looks Kitten, and we have I-ams kitten dry food always available. I don't know their weight, but Frank is much heavier even though he is more slender looking. Sure there is nothing to worry about and maybe its just her chunky nature?! What does everyone think?

Pictures and video's included!

Oh my gosh, isn't she adorable! If I'm honest, I do think she looks a bit heavy... although, I don't have any advice.

I'm sure someone will come along to help you shortly

Hi, thanks for your reply, yes she is lovely, and we love Frank too. I have seen your posts about your new kitten Enzo and it made me start looking at Maine Coons! Enzo looks awesome and massive already. Would love a long haired solid blue Maine Coon to add to the family.

Re: Is Phoebe Fat?!

If you're worried about her weight, take her to the vets. They'll be able to tell you if she's overweight for her age and breed and they will also be able to give you advice on how to keep her to an acceptable weight.

She's adorable though.

This is my advice, also. She does look on the heavy side in that photo. I don't like free feeding, myself. I think scheduled meals are better. Many cats are self regulators, but many aren't. And obesity can lead to many serious health problems. Best to get control of it now!

They are just gorgeous, by the way. So soft and plush looking!

Re: Is Phoebe Fat?!

Shes a beaut cat I think she looks just a tad bit pudgy.

Tidbit will be six months old the end of the week. She is about 5 pounds around there and is a mixed breed cat. I have a feeling she will be a tiny cat tho.

Re: Is Phoebe Fat?!

I agree with jaxx and lorilu (and yes she is gorgeous!).

Our cats always put on a bit of weight in the autumn, ready for the winter. Plus they start getting their winter coats which makes them look bigger. Also most cats look 'fatter' when lying on their backs (especially Phili ).

Re: Is Phoebe Fat?!

Hi

Pheobe and Frank are so cute and look very happy together

I have 2 british shorthairs aged just under 7 months. My boy (Theo) is 5.2 Kg and my girl (Bella) is 3.25 Kg but I think she is a little on the small side. I feed them 3 pouches of Hi-Life between them and put Iams kitten dry down a couple of times a day also (when the bowl is empty I don't always immediately fill it again if I think they have had enough and are just being greedy. BSH are renowned for being a heavy breed but I do think it wise to regulate their intake of food a bit for health reasons

Re: Is Phoebe Fat?!

My vet mentioned that they should (roughly) be 1lb in weight for each month in age so a 6 month old should be 6lb... but it does depend on breed etc - it should give you a rough guide tho. Mine are tiny for their age are 2 months old and only 700grms so waaay off their weight - but think its cos they are twins so were born small (almost same size as the little runt of the litter...)!
