looking for advice.

Hi all. I am shortly ( in a few days) going to be adopting a male tortie from a rescue. Having looked on the internet I know what a rarity he is but some sites say that male torties can have health problems but don't mention anything specific. he will be neutered before I get him.

I was just wandering if anyone on here has experience of male torties and what I might expect from him?

Thanks for reading,
Lornaxx

A male tortie? are you sure?? It's just that they are extremely rare.... perhaps fewer than 1:3,000 torties are male.

If he really is a male tortie then no, no health problems as far as I know. The only issue is that they are usually sterile, but that won't matter if he is going to be a neutered pet. If they are fertile, they don't breed more male torties as a general rule.

There's a fabulous book all about male torties: Cats Are Not Peas by Laura Gould. It explains everything you need to know (and more) about this unusual side of genetics - which started when Laura adopted a rescue cat which turned out to be a male tortie.

Re: looking for advice.

Thanks for the link. The rescue I'm getting him from are pretty sure he's a he but we'll find out for definate tomorrow as the kitties are getting neutered then. They've never been wrong before but there's always a first time. I might well get a phone call telling me to think up girlie names!!

Re: looking for advice.

OMG You got him! The wee boy in dunf cats protection, I so wanted him.
I have 3 torties all girls though a short med and a long hair I really wanted him and would have cut my fingers off to get him if I wasn't redundant just now

I'm so excited for you! From what I have heard no additional health problems, human males with Kleinfelters syndrome (XXY chromosomes) live normally but are just more feminine in certain areas. For example, boobs or enlarged nipples, less hair growth. PLease can we have pics ASAP

Re: looking for advice.

No he's not from cats protection. I'm getting him from Help Fife Animals.

ETA: have just seen the article on cats protection website. How unusual. My boy is 8 weeks, but as I say things may change tomorrow!

Re: looking for advice.

Well no phone call today so can only assume he is a he unless they're waiting to tell me when i go pick him up.

It is a small world Claire. My previous 2 cats where from HFA also. I used to go to the dog training classes. I just lost Tilly and Jasper a couple of months ago. Both were hit by cars, so this little one will be in the house (hopefully).

Where abouts in Fife are you?

Re: looking for advice.

Are you sure he is torti and not tabby some people get them mixed up?

Does he have bits of orange or cream randomly on his body?

Tabby does not always mean striped and some people think that tabby's are tortie's simply because they are not striped.

Like other people have said a male tortie is extremely rare!

From what I have read they have no health issues other than being infertile which is obviously not an issue if he is to be neutered.
