Chewing food and no treats?!

We've tried to give Enzo treats before and he just looks at them and turns away. We've tried this with SEVERAL different brands and types... I think this is SO strange. Who doesn't like a treat?? Anyways... I attempted to give him a treat again this morning and he only sees it if you put it on the floor (he doesn't see it if it is in my hand ). He picked it up and tossed and turned it around in his mouth for about 5 seconds before actually crunching it once, then swallowing it. Strange. It was at this point that I realised I had NEVER heard him crunch food before???

He is fed wet food twice a day with dry food left out. I went in the kitchen and put his dry food down and listened closely, it appears that he picks it up and swallows it???

I picked him up and gave him a cuddle and my first instinct was his teeth! I opened his mouth and had a good look at his teeth, they all appear to be fine... healthy gums.

Is this normal? For cats to not chew their food and also for them to have almost 0 interest in treats???

Phili! She's really fussy about her food - will only eat dry food, when we give the cats a meaty treat (pouches of wet food) she will lick up the gravy and leaves the meat for the others to finish off. There's only one type of cat treat she will eat, I think it's the cheesy one, but Mrs CB is the expert on which cat prefers which type of treat - they all have a favourite, and also flavours they won't eat.

Re the not chewing - I immediately thought teeth/gum problems but if they are ok not sure what to suggest. Maybe he just likes to gulp his food down as quickly as possible Howie was a bit like that - he'd cram his food down asap then get back to the important stuff like sleeping on someone's lap.

no idea i'm afraid but you might want to hold off on the treats until his tummy is settled

Re: Chewing food and no treats?!

I remember learning a while back that cats don't actually chew most of their food.

My old cat had all her teeth removed after a mouth infection and I was worried about how she would manage her food but she still quite happily eats dry food, wet food and meat.

They generally use their tongue rather than their teeth to break to food down.

In terms of not liking the treats it's all about personal taste, all cats are different.

I have one that will not eat any meat!
It's like someone forget to tell him that cat's are carnivores

I would just try a few different things, maybe a bit of chicken would go down well?

Oh, really?

I just did a quick Google search and found this article: Why Don’t Cats Chew Their Food?

Very interesting!!!! So, I guess Enzo is completely normal!

Re: Chewing food and no treats?!

just thought i would add that maine coons are notorious for not chewing so its very normal, but you will have to keep an eye on his teeth as he gets older to prevent gum disease

Red face Re: Chewing food and no treats?!

My Katy is really picky about what she will or will not eat. Treats were sneered at with disdain!...until I discovered ' Dreamies'......she will kill to get these, trying to grab the packet they are in and help herself! Strange creatures cats!!

Dreamies, eh? I'll have to grab a bag and see what he thinks...

Currently we have Whiskas Temptations (Whiskas Temptations Cat Treats with Salmon 60gm-Treats-Pets at Home: Buy Pet Supplies from our Online UK Pet Shop), which looks very similar to the Dreamies! Also, we have Purina Felix Licken's! No real interest in either :P
