new kitten help!!

Dear all

I've just picked up my very cute kitten from the shelte yesterday. Unfortunatly, she doesn't seem so happy to be here. She's about 7 - 8 weeks old, but hisses everytime I go near her, and runs away. Then cries when she is left alone but scratches if I try to interact with her. And has no interest in playing with anything.

What do I do?! she has plenty of food and water, she is in a nice darkish and warm room (I realise that she is freaking out, so I thought it might relax her). But, what can I do to help her relax in her new home?! and get used to her new owners?

Should I just leave her be?

Any help would be great.

Cheers

Re: new kitten help!!

Best tokeher in a room with you with food/water/loo and ignore her! Dont pick her up and dont go over to her, let her cme to you, offer to play with abit of string or something!

I wouldnt leave her all alone in a dark room she is prob missing her mm & sis/bros!!
could take 3 months to settle, she hasnt even been there a day yet! give it time!!

Re: new kitten help!!

Hey

Thanks for the advice! I will continue to leave her be, but keep in the same room with her.

Sorry - I was getting all a bit worried....

Cheers

Re: new kitten help!!

Effie was timid for a few days when we got her, we just gave her lots of attention but on her terms, i.e. as some have suggested, let her choose when she wants to come to you, I'm sure it will happen soon. We gave Effie a covered hot water bottle, too, as we thought she would be missing the warmth of her litter. Hopefully your kitty will come round when she is ready.

Re: new kitten help!!

While this wouldn't suit everyone for obvious reasons, one of the best places for a new kitten is your bedroom. Your scent is there, it's comfortable, and while you sleep your kitten can get used to your presence in a passive way. Your bed will be warm and attractive to them - and also when you're horizontal you're much less intimidating to a cat.... in their terms, you've shrunk to their height. A nervous cat can get used to you while you're asleep and come to you on slightly different terms than when you're standing up awake.

Re: new kitten help!!

hey all

She is in our bedroom as we need to keep her seperate from our other new cat - Winston, who has kennel cough (and who mostly hides under the sofa, but seems much happier ).

Last night (still in the room that we sleep), we gave her a covered hot water bottle, and kept some relaxing music playing, but she still cried of and on all night, and more so this morning when we were up and about. She sounds so upset, its so upsetting that she seems so unhappy .But then she just hissses at us (in between the crying) if we go near her.

However, I guess she is little, and confused, and we are way bigger than her, so she has all she needs and we just have to leave her be, it'll just take time, as you all suggest

Thank you for all your kind replies, and fingers crossed

Cheers
